Guided tour of the exhibition
𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗖 𝗡𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲: 𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗸𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗯𝗶𝘁.𝘁𝘃 𝟮.𝟬 🦆🐇
𝟮𝟭 𝗠𝗔𝗬, 𝟭𝟲:𝟬𝟬—𝟭𝟳:𝟬𝟬
Part of @ljubljanaartweekend

𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑘𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑏𝑖𝑡.𝑡𝑣 is a video installation that explores the political implications of contemporary vision technologies, questioning how computational photography, datasets, and rendered imagery often act as substitutes for what is real. The work centres on a confused and curious queer character: a digital reincarnation of the 1892 duck-rabbit optical illusion, popularized by philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein to illustrate the ambiguity of perception. Now revived in the age of synthetic vision, this character becomes a vessel through which the project navigates the trials and tribulations of self-discovery and CGI production.

Curated by: 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗼 𝗗𝗲 𝗠𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗶𝘀 for tactics&practice#17: #BecomingImage.
The tour will be guided by 𝗘𝗺𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝘇𝗻𝗶𝗸 𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰́.

𝑁𝑒𝑤 𝑂𝑙𝑑 𝐻𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑙𝑎𝑛𝑑 by 𝗔𝗸𝗶𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗼 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗶
A digital film exploring the meaning of “homeland” in a networked world using a 3D-scanned avatar. It presents homeland as something more visible through distance or loss. The work blends virtual structures and absence to rethink belonging.
+
𝐻𝑜𝑚𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑔 by 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗗𝗼𝗿𝗳
Reimagines The Odyssey as a reflection on home in a time of environmental and technological uncertainty. Combining live footage and digital media, it explores memory, displacement, and fractured realities. It questions the possibility of returning to a stable sense of home.
+
𝐸𝑙𝑒𝑝ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝐽𝑢𝑖𝑐𝑒 by 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗖 𝗡𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲
Inspired by Thomas Nagel’s essay, the film reflects on the limits of perception through a bat’s perspective. It questions whether human-made computer vision can move beyond subjective experience. The work challenges assumptions about objectivity in AI.

𝗡𝗢𝗗𝗘#𝟯 of #BecomingImage centres on the work of 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗖 𝗡𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 – a designer and researcher exploring computation through #computervision, 3D animation, and #synthetic datasets. Their work critiques machine learning for reinforcing assumptions and shaping perception, while advocating non-binary technological imaginaries.

The programme brings together a series of events anchored by the video installation 🔵 𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑘𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑏𝑖𝑡.𝑡𝑣 2.0, which explores the political implications of contemporary vision technologies and questions how computational photography, datasets, and #rendered imagery increasingly act as substitutes for what is considered real. Through a playful yet critical approach, Niquille examines how computational systems shape reality, producing images that function less as representations of the world than as tools of classification and detection.

The Swiss Grand Award for Design 2026 is awarded to three outstanding positions that have shaped Swiss design and continue to expand its horizons: atelier oï, Ursula Hiestand and Simone C Niquille.

On the recommendation of the Federal Design Commission, the Federal Office of Culture (BAK) honors three positions whose work has had a lasting impact on Swiss design culture at both national and international levels. Their practices span architecture, product design, graphic design, research, and media-based work, reflecting the diversity of contemporary design in Switzerland.

@atelier_oï is recognized for its interdisciplinary practice that combines product design, architecture, scenography, and material research into a poetic and internationally influential body of work.
Ursula Hiestand is honored for shaping Swiss graphic design and the visual culture of everyday life through clarity, precision, and social responsibility. Together with her husband Ernst Hiestand, she led the Zurich-based studio E + U Hiestand from 1960 to 1980, and subsequently pursued an independent career with a strong focus on socially responsible design projects.
Simone C Niquille (@technoflesh) is awarded for her transdisciplinary practice in Media & Interaction Design, critically examining how digital technologies shape bodies, spaces, and systems of power.

Since 2007, the Swiss Grand Award for Design has recognized designers of major cultural significance; each award is endowed with CHF 40,000.
The award ceremony will take place on 15 June 2026 in Basel as part of the Swiss Design Awards exhibition.

On the occasion of the Swiss Grand Award for Design 2026 award ceremony, video portraits in the Swiss Design Awards exhibition and a publication will be released featuring brief portraits by @susanna_koeberle, interviews with the award winners by @keijiashizawa, Isabel Koellreuter & Franziska Schürch @schuerchundkoellreuter as well as @noraomurchu, and visual material on the award recipients.
