I’m so exited and thankful to be awarded the Kunstenaar Start grant from @mondriaanfund! Their support gives me the opportunity to reflect on my previous work, freely experiment, and make new works over the coming year.

I’ll be working on several projects, and exhibitions including:

Often I fell asleep listening to the bubbles rising up from the bottom of the lake, along the walls of my room. Inspired by these air bubbles, I started blowing them myself out of glass. These bubbles resemble the bubbles trapped in ice, a reminder of the frozen winters of my youth.

I grew up on a houseboat in a swampy area in North Holland, the Westeinderplassen in Aalsmeer. My room was under water. Often I fell asleep listening to the bubbles rising up from the bottom of the lake, along the walls of my room. Inspired by these air bubbles, I started blowing them myself out of glass. These bubbles resemble the bubbles trapped in ice, a reminder of the frozen winters of my youth.

A Fired Forest - by Ster Borgman

New year, new life.
Outside, winter holds the landscape in stillness. Snow and ice cover the ground, lakes freeze, growth pauses. Yet beneath the cold surface, life is not gone—it waits.

Ster Borgman’s work reflects this same suspended state. Through acts of material transformation, Borgman explores how nature endures extremes. Like an alchemist, pigments are made from plants, stones, and oxidized metals gathered through walking and attention, inviting wonder for non-human resilience.

In the glass oven, plants from the Veluwe are exposed to fire. Their bodies burn away, leaving delicate imprints sealed in glass—burnt stems, fragile outlines, traces of what once was. As in winter, life appears absent, yet its potential remains.
Fire and frost mirror one another. Both halt growth, both transform, both prepare the ground. The Veluwe, shaped by increasing drought and fire, continues to regenerate—just as forests do after winter, sending new leaves from blackened stems.

Borgman’s works exist in this in-between moment: between fire and regrowth, between ice and thaw. They remind us that stillness is not an end, but a pause—holding the promise of return.

Een tijdje terug gingen we, voorafgaand aan diens tentoonstelling, op atelierbezoek bij Ster Borgman. Daar liet Ster ons onder andere zien welke materialen die onlangs in de glasoven had gestopt en wat voor magische processen er dan volgen..

In de projectruimte van Kunstenlab toont Ster Borgman een reeks glasplaten met zoutkristallen. Wanneer je goed kijkt, zie je hoe dit mineraal verschillende vormen kan aannemen. Het kan oplossen, bewegen, kristalliseren. Door vocht vast te houden, of juist weer los te laten, groeit het langzaam voort. Achter het glas ontstaan patronen, en op sommige plekken kruipen de zoutkristallen naar beneden langs de muur van de tentoonstellingsruimte.

De kunstenaar laat daarmee zien hoeveel vormen dit materiaal kan aannemen. Wat in eerste instantie statisch en solide lijkt, blijkt in staat zich steeds opnieuw te transformeren in nieuwe en verrassende gedaantes.

De tentoonstelling Biotopes of the Inorganic van Ster Borgman is nog t/m 21 september te zien bij Kunstenlab.

Ster Borman (die/diens) toont een aantal bestaande werken in de projectruimte en steeg van Kunstenlab. De kunstenaar werkt met glas, roest en natuurlijke materialen en verwondert zich over de eigenaardige vormen die ze aannemen.

De kunstenaar werkte de afgelopen twee jaar in het startersatelier van Kunstenlab. Hier werd zand omgesmolten tot glas. Roest vervormd tot druipende rode vormen. Organische vormen zorgvuldig gevuld met stoom. Borgman gaat als een soort alchemist te werk en zoekt naar dat stukje waar wetenschap en magie elkaar aanraken. Omdat het materiaal plots iets doet wat het niet ‘hoort’ te doen. In de tentoonstelling ligt onder andere een kunstwerk dat tijdens een werkperiode in IJsland tot stand kwam. Door deze niet-menselijke natuur in de schijnwerpers te zetten, hoopt die je te verwonderen over de diepe tijd waarin de aarde voortdurend beweegt.
