Collaboration with Caleb Witvoet and Sophia Lengle
May to June 2025
Back in 2024, Caleb invited me to collaborate on a new installation for a show Hotel Maria Kapel in Hoorn. His vision was a fully accessible skating ramp from scratch using self-made plywood, the shape created, resembled the arches of the chapel, which could be used during opening hours.
By 2025, that initial idea to create a soundscape had grown into a much more real one, rooted in listening, building, collecting, and shaping context by the site-specific material in the chapel.
The resulting work, Truncated I–II, features Japanese pull saws used during the production of the skate ramp, now attached to an Arduino-driven clockwork. Every half hour, the mechanism played two interlocking rhythms, saw-blades clanking and dancing with the wood that once resisted them. This acompanied @calebwhitefoot painstakingly quality crafted skateramp and materials combined with @sophia.lengle intricate weavings located on the windowsills of the chapel's arched windows.
“Truncation” becomes a metaphor: the act of cutting down as a cycle that never truly ends. A phantom of growth. A reminder that construction and destruction are always intertwined. What once was tree becomes structure, and yet the echo of its life lingers.
The work is a perfect example of in situ creation, DIY, cacophonic, arythmical and almost impulsive. But the tormented shape of the piece I left alive, for I think it represents truncation best.

I’m deeply grateful to the crew at @hotelmariakapel, and to Caleb and Sophia. I could never have imagined learning the intricacies of Arduino coding or constructing such a machine on my own, it also finally initiated my possibility to make self sequencing instrumental sculptures.#l

For the [MONSTER ARCHIEF] project [Bylma Assembly], which focuses on the house of Rudolph de Mepsche, @sssssiem and @michielteeuw undertook a number of field trips to de Schierstins (Feanwalden), @menkemaborg.uithuizen (Uithuizen), Borg Ewsum (Middelstum), @museumnienoord (Leek), Welgelegen (Sappemeer) and @landgoed_fraeylemaborg (Slochteren). In order to get an idea of the archetypal Borg architecture, they collected architectural samples in different media, laying the basis of a library of architectural typologies.
Siem: "Through our comprehensive exploration of the Borgen, both within and around the premises, we’ve been able to intricately align the speculative models we’ve developed thus far with physical examples. Experiencing these sites firsthand and at our own pace allowed us to immerse ourselves in the architectural and natural nuances crucial for accurately recreating Borg Bylma in its historical timeframe. While talking to local experts, we were able to broaden up our view of the life on a borg, and the architectural choices. Beyond the buildings, our focus extended to collecting numerous samples from the surrounding gardens and roadways, thereby broadening the scope of our reconstruction of borg Bylma. The varied alterations of these locations over time provided valuable insights into past movements and decisions, often revealing what elements were added later, and the possibility of historical flora and fauna. We strongly encourage those interested to visit these sites in person, as they give a deep insight of the history Groningen and Ommelanden."

We strongly encourage those interested to visit these sites in person, as they give a deep insight of the history Groningen and Ommelanden."

research update | borgen & steenhuizen

“The location of detention”
.
For the residency at @willowartspace I researched what happens when we access the information streams of a closed detention camp, do we see the realities behind the stories of the detained?
.
Kamp Zeist during the first world war was a place of refuge for belgian refugees, fleeing the war in their homeland. During the proces of research many different depictions of the camp could be found in different archives, some colorful some more grim. Information is ommited, temporary displaced, and or curated in confinement. Therefor being non discriminatory; I started to reconstruct the location, morphed together in a timeless field, to better understand the imaginary of the media at the time.
.
In the installation one can visit the remains(paper scraps) of an old barracks built at kamp Zeist around 1914, the magical location incorperates missing pieces to be collected by the visitor.
.
Do you want to visit the location? Then I'd highly reccommend you to visit willow-art.space . Here you can walk around and discover the installation in (digital) person. In this same space works by: @sterborgman @fadi.houmani@michielteeuw @sopo.upyeonmul

Siem (@sssssiem ) delves into the history of a ghostly island detention camp tied to the 1914 Kamp Zeist revolt. Through artistic research and the digitization of archival materials, Siem connects past and present, highlighting the hidden truths of the detained. Their work visualises complex narratives, layering historical data, uncovering what goes on underneath institutionalised sources. Siem’s approach challenges us to reconsider the role of archiving in uncovering a plurality of narratives

I've been surviving lately.. just working , but also creating more than ever. These are stills of a visual work I seem to not be able to complete yet. They just felt better as dynamic stills. Hope to work more on my sound pieces soon, and definetly even more coming after this.
.
This work resembles the position of the never ending buttress supported buildings, that onto soggy soil tries to hold up. Without entrance but with a giant gazing viewport. I always imagined a dog waking up after a tiring night, finding its favorite place had been transformed into a wacky construction. Both experiences are from dreams.

NOW ON SHOW - Home Scene (Bylma Assembly Vol. 2)
This vitrine installation shows photographic and sculptural reconstructions of the borg (manor) Bylma in faan, the private estate of Rudolph de Mepsche, who sentenced 21 sodomites to death in 1731 during the Monster Trial of Faan. Besides being a center of power, the borg also took a central role in the trial. In the installation, the domestic presence of landowner de Mepsche is evoked.
