Save the date and tell a friend!! On Monday June 8th Small Business Forward will be heading to City Hall with our fellow bar owners, staff, and patrons to rally with our community against the proposed patio smoking ban. Small Businesses face so many hurdles operating in a city as expensive as San Francisco, and the enforcement as well as the financial consequences of this proposed legislation would only fall on the small business and nightlife communities.

"The community suffers when politicians don’t listen to small businesses."

As Small Business Month comes to a close, we're sharing this segment on the nbba.sf @sfnbbaorg
North Beach Business Association's efforts last year to protect the vibrancy and affordability of one of the most active neighborhood commercial districts in the city. And we discuss what happens when City Hall doesn’t listen to small businesses — and pushes policies that are solutions-looking-for-problems.

"District 3 Thrives," the pseudonym Sup. Danny Sauter gave to his legislation gutting North Beach's Special Use District, is one of a package of citywide laws pushed by himself and Sup. Myrna Melgar to address vacancies and unaffordability — unfortunately these laws had the opposite effect by removing small business protections.

By contrast, PROPEL takes a look at why policies like the Commercial Vacancy Tax, which was crafted in partnership with small businesses, actually work to address the problem of vacancies and affordability.

This Small Business Month, we stand with small business owners and workers who know what makes good policy. Supervisors Melgar and Sauter have *another* law that hurts small businesses up for discussion next Monday, June 8th — an outdoor patio smoking-ban that no one asked for.

Please join us in standing with our @smallbusinessforward friends to demand City Hall start focusing on real problems and listen to real workers. Land Use hearing starts at 1:30pm in Room 250 at City Hall on June 8th!

Yes on D: We shouldn’t have to balance a city budget on the backs of working people.

Please join Small Business Forward as we stand in solidarity with our fellow bar owners, tenders, staff, and patrons in opposition to the proposed smoking ban for bar patios. While we appreciate the intent behind the proposal, we believe it poses a real economic harm to our bars in a time of great economic insecurity and uncertainty. We also take issue with the fact that enforcement will fall on bar employees and staff who already have their hands full tending to patrons. Most of all, there was no substantive outreach to our bars in advance of the policy proposal. San Francisco has many issues facing our city and our residents that we believe should be a greater priority such as building affordable housing, passing commercial rent control, enforcing our existing commercial vacancy tax, and so much more!

We will be mobilizing on Monday 5/18 at 1:30pm to make public comment against this proposed measure at the Land Use and Transportation Committee. Join us!

May isn’t just Small Business Month — it’s Early Voting for the June 2nd election!

Get the facts and don’t be fooled by SuperPAC’s spouting billionaire-backed lies: Vote No on C and YES on D!

Listen to small business owners: Prop D restores a fair tax on the wealthiest corporate CEOs to fund essential public services, healthcare, transit, and small business support. Whether it’s Trump or Lurie cuts, small businesses are impacted by public disinvestment. And it’s time for billionaires to pay a fraction of their fair share.

PROPEL and Small Business Forward are joining with firefighters, nurses, teachers, working families and more to demand better for San Francisco.

Vote No on C + YES on D before June 2nd!

Small businesses support Prop D!

Federal cuts are taking away essential public services from our neighborhoods and commercial corridors. Prop D is the only solution. Prop D only applies to the largest corporations with at least $1 billion in revenue, 1,000 employees, and CEOs that make 100 times their average worker’s salary.

Prop D does not tax small businesses, homeowners, or you!

“Small businesses rely on vital city services like street sweeping, trash pickup, and community ambassadors. Prop D will fund these services without raising our taxes.” — Justin Dolezal, Co-Owner of Bar Part Time

Hot take, but not really. We should have rent control for residential and commercial spaces so that our small businesses can stay in the city and thrive.

Small Business Forward is proud to endorse Natalie Gee, a lifelong community advocate for San Franciscans and our neighborhoods.
Natalie Gee (朱凱勤) was born and raised in San Francisco and educated at Lowell High and SF State. Natalie’s activism started in her childhood. As a kid, Natalie translated English to Cantonese so her mother could understand what was happening at neighborhood meetings. Community activism lit a fire under Natalie.

Natalie organized in Chinatown for over ten years, co-founding Youth MOJO to empower high schoolers to take action on issues affecting their lives. She brought Chinese and Latinx youth together through Common Roots, proving that our diverse communities are strongest when we stand united. Natalie has secured important legislative victories as the Chief of Staff in the Board of Supervisors District 10 Office. Natalie fought to bring San Francisco: Language access protections, crucial bus service restorations, and COVID hazard pay for grocery workers.

Natalie is dedicated to protecting our neighborhoods and merchant corridors that provide essential goods and services to our community members. She is also committed to creating pathways for more affordable housing in San Francisco that our small business owners and workers depend on.
