As Small Business Month comes to a close, we're sharing this segment on the nbba.sf @sfnbbaorg
North Beach Business Association's efforts last year to protect the vibrancy and affordability of one of the most active neighborhood commercial districts in the city. And we discuss what happens when City Hall doesn’t listen to small businesses — and pushes policies that are solutions-looking-for-problems.
"District 3 Thrives," the pseudonym Sup. Danny Sauter gave to his legislation gutting North Beach's Special Use District, is one of a package of citywide laws pushed by himself and Sup. Myrna Melgar to address vacancies and unaffordability — unfortunately these laws had the opposite effect by removing small business protections.
By contrast, PROPEL takes a look at why policies like the Commercial Vacancy Tax, which was crafted in partnership with small businesses, actually work to address the problem of vacancies and affordability.
This Small Business Month, we stand with small business owners and workers who know what makes good policy. Supervisors Melgar and Sauter have *another* law that hurts small businesses up for discussion next Monday, June 8th — an outdoor patio smoking-ban that no one asked for.

Access to land continues to be one of the biggest financial barriers to building housing, especially in 7x7 San Francisco. In 2015, San Francisco voters approved Prop K by 74% — providing the clear mandate to City Hall: “Public land belongs to the people and should be prioritized for affordable housing development.”
A decade later, City Hall continues to find ways to circumvent the will of the voters, blowing key opportunities to deliver hundreds of homes on public sites that are then lost forever. And ultimately, it’s everyday San Franciscans that lose out when politicians don’t take affordable housing solutions seriously.
