Anyone following my work recently will probably know that my film Green Lung (2024) was responsible for some incredible career moments and personal experiences last year. It's been a real blessing to continue to show this film and travel with it to exciting spaces. I just want to take a moment to update on upcoming things and share further gratitude to everyone that has screened this.

Taking home my first ever two awards last year at Ottawa and Primanima has been a wonderful source of creative confidence and support - really pushing me forwards to try and make the most of the opportunities I have as an artist working in the field and to double down on this creative path. Thank you many times over to the juries and festivals for recognising the film, and thank you always to @animateprojectsuk for commissioning the film and @ground.sound for the incredible sound design. 🏆🩶

I'm also excited to announce that Green Lung continues to travel, with a few great festivals ahead:

In January, Green Lung will be part of the London Short Film Festival, featuring in a couple of programmes focused on animation. I'm super excited to attend in person and share the stage with so many UK and international peers. 🇬🇧

It will also be showing at British Shorts in Berlin around the same time which looks to be a great programme. 🇩🇪

Then, in March I'm planning on attending Kaboom Festival for the first time in the Netherlands, where the film will play in the Poetry in Motion programme. I'm so excited to catch up with the new friends I've made on this journey again and to see more great work with many new filmmakers. 🇳🇱

Anyway, here is a copy of the poster!

Hope to see you all soon at a screening sometime somewhere 💥🧡‼️

Excited to share the poster design and illustration I made for SCRATCH (2025), a short film directed by Hugo Wood @threetreesfilms

✂️✍️⚫️

It was really fun to work through ideas for this design alongside Hugo, creating iterations of pochoir prints crossed with paper stencils to reveal the hidden layer of anguish that torments the main character, Tom.

🎥🎞️

SCRATCH follows Tom as he attempts to unpick the end of a relationship. In the process, he finds himself assaulted by the memories of a terrible childhood injury that forces him to confront the scar he hides from himself.

FILM CREW:

Director: Hugo Wood
Producer: Robert Kirkwood, Ashley Rees, Hugo Wood Writer. Hugo Wood
DOE: Ashley Rees
Editor: Robert Kirkwood
Sound Design: Calum Sample
Composer: Hugo Wood
Production Design: Jessie Huckin
Hair & Makeup: Ili Newson
VFX: Tahwun Butcher

Cast: Eden Hutchinson, Anja Cilia, Kat Mace

Thank you also to @_stairz for getting me involved!

A quick update on Green Lung’s festival journey…

I’ve been very honoured to have the film selected for a bunch of screenings at animation festivals internationally.

Green Lung recently played at @animator_festival in Poland 🇵🇱, and screened earlier in the year at @anifilmfestival (Czechia) 🇨🇿, @itfs_festival_stuttgart (Germany) 🇩🇪, @brightonanimation (UK) 🇬🇧 and also as part of the Blurred Ecologies screening organised by @sustainabledarkroom (Finland) 🇫🇮!!

Ahead are European screenings at @anibar_official in Kosovo 🇽🇰 (July) and @viborganimationfestival in Denmark 🇩🇰 (September)!!

🦉🦉🦉

The film will also play for the first time in North America at @ottawa.animationfestivalin September! 🇨🇦 I am really excited to be attending this year with the project and am really honoured to screen alongside other great artists in the competition!

🍃🍁🍃

Thank you to @animateprojectsuk and @derby_arboretum_friends for commissioning the film and offering support throughout the production.

Major thank you also to @ground.sound for his work on the soundtrack - collaborating with Martin really helped me find the direction of the film and shape it in an organic and exciting way.

🌿🌿🌿

Hopefully more good news to follow along the film’s journey - please watch this space to learn more!

Really thrilled to be able to share the music video that we created for @firestationsband and the lead single of their new album “Many White Horses” !!

The project was a collaboration between myself and @lovelylawn - drawing upon Lauren’s experience sailing around the Small Isles in Scotland last year for a @sailbritain residency. This journey undertaken alongside Mike and Laura from the band became the catalyst for the album and led our thinking in preparing visuals to accompany their music.

Combining screenprinting with found objects, we focused on bringing rich analogue texture to the layered sound of the music; making Lauren’s pixel designs and our shared animated loops physical and tangible images that sit in organic ambient spaces.

🌊🌊🌊⛵️

Please go and see the full music video on the @lostmaprecords YouTube channel!

Massive thank you to @firestationsband @laurachops for getting us involved with this dreamy brief!

I’m super excited to announce that Green Lung will be screening in this year’s ITFS Stuttgart animation festival in May!

Stuttgart was my first experience of a big animation festival outside of the UK when I attended with my student film 2 years ago. It was such a joy to attend and was a really welcoming and exciting event; allowing me to meet lots of wonderful international peers and fellow animators.

One of the highlights was witnessing the evening screenings of professional films in the International Competition on the biggest screen of the kino. It’s going to be such an honour to be returning this year, sharing the stage with other animators who I truly admire.

Many many thanks to @animateprojectsuk for commissioning and producing the project; also many thanks to Martin @ground.sound for his support and wonderful work on the sound design!

I’m pleased to announce that my new film, ‘Green Lung’ is available online! 🍃

🔗 Please see the link in my bio/story highlights for access 🔗

🌿🌿🌿

‘Green Lung’ explores the history of Britain’s first urban public park, Derby Arboretum, which was gifted to the citizens of Derby by mill-owner and philanthropist Joseph Strutt in 1840. The film makes connections between the nature of the park, and the industrial working lives of those it was intended to benefit.

In making this film I developed a system for animating screen-printed images, using acetate sheets which were scanned, cleaned and re-used alongside paper stencils and water-based inks. Beginning to consider sustainability in my practices has been a fascinating journey and offered me many unique creative options, I look forward to building on these ideas in the future. 🍁

Endless thanks to my sound designer, Martin Viktorov @ground.sound , who was a wonderful first-time collaborator. Martin’s sound really helped lead my thinking and direction as I came to piece together the film and imagery. 💥⚙️

Much gratitude also to Jo from @derby_arboretum_friends , who granted me access to a rich archive of material on the Arboretum, whose images swirled through my head as I worked on the project. 🌳⛲️

Green Lung was commissioned by @animateprojectsuk and supported by Arts Council England @aceagrams

Summer Signals

I’ve had the pleasure of attending screenprinting classes at @spikeprintstudio over the last few weeks and managed to print this short loop that I animated a while back! ⛅️ Thank you to @simonjtozer and @gailmason1 for being the most patient and helpful tutors through my learning process - I really love screenprinting and hope to continue experimenting with this technique 🧽🪣

Introducing our first PLANTING artist, @simon.hamlyn who is working with ‘Friends of Derby Arboretum’ @derby_arboretum_friends.

Here are Simon’s early process tests. Simon uses colourful printmaking techniques to create his analogue animations, with a focus on sustainability by re-using materials.

“The animation technique for this film is informed by a desire to avoid leaving a stack of paper frames behind as I realise the project. All paper-waste materials are scanned for use in the animation and will be hand-recycled through a DIY paper-making process - which will be further fed back into the project.”

Follow link in bio for more PLANTING information.

I’ve been looking over some of my sketchbook from the past year or so… There are lots of moments and encounters that I’d love to share 🫛🫛🫛 (all very much overdue, with more to follow❗️)

These drawings are snapshots of quiet moments I had abroad last year, mostly blissful Spring afternoons in Ghent but also records of my time at the ITFS Animation Festival in Germany 🥨 and Cinanima in Portugal 🌊
