From the fashion archive: BLACK (2004 / revisited 2015)

On 3 June 2004, Alexander McQueen returned to the London catwalk for one night only, in association with American Express. Black re-staged defining moments from his shows, opening with a duet between Kate Moss and Michael Clark.

Behind the scenes, Nick Knight had just minutes with each model, shooting them pressed against glass in a nod to the show’s box set. Among them were Naomi Campbell, Lily Cole and Moss herself. The images were meant to be brought together after the show, but stayed untouched in the archive for years.

In 2015, to mark Savage Beauty at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the work was finally brought together. A return to the archive, and a way of honouring Lee McQueen.

Today’s Fashion Film Archive pull is White Wedding: Let Them Eat Kate (2008).

@nick_knight, @katemossagency, @jakechapman and @dinos_chapman_studio come together in a grand collaboration with @agentprovocateur, marking the launch of its bridal range by extending a narrative campaign into a series of experimental films.

Working from a six-part script by founder Joe Corré, the team created six striking stills that map the slow collapse of a bride’s big day, unpicking both the fantasy and the institution around it.

Drawn from footage captured across The Happiest Day of Her Life, The Garden of Eden, Bad News, Frenzy, Revenge and Let Them Eat Kate, each image is pushed into motion through projection and in-camera experimentation.

With styling by @kegrand, hair by @sammcknight1 and make-up by @thevalgarland, the series is brought to life by an iconic creative team.

Across the films, Moss moves between extremes, from demure bride to dangerous, Lynchian siren, hinting at new creative ground for fashion film within advertising.

Released over one week in May 2008, the full sequence captures a complete marital meltdown.

From the archive. Hips (2010), part of The Fashion Body season, captured New Orleans’ sissy bounce performer @therealquackkkkk in a raw celebration of movement, identity and the body in motion.

Styled by @edward_enninful and @jackborkett, the film sits at the intersection of fashion, performance and underground dance culture long before the mainstream caught up.

Today from the fashion film archive: BONED (2007)

‘To find a way not to ignore the male form, but to enhance it.’ That was Nick Knight’s stated aim with BONED, his editorial collaboration with Alister Mackie for AnOther Man magazine that challenged traditional representations of masculinity, men’s underwear and the male body itself.

Mackie invited designers including Gareth Pugh, Marios Schwab and Christopher Kane to reinterpret menswear lingerie through lace, corsetry and sheer.

The shoot, which was broadcast live, featured models sourced through adult modelling agencies and pushed the boundaries of fashion image-making in ways that still feel provocative today.

Fun fact: framed lingerie from the project still hangs on the bathroom walls of SHOWstudio.

Extending the world of the editorial, a fashion film by Tell No One brings the dreamlike shoot into motion.

Extraordinary Gentlemen (2010)

For Another Man magazine, @nick_knight invited @lucymcrae and @barthess into the studio alongside stylist @alistermackie for a two-day experimental shoot.

The result is a post-human fusion of bodies transformed with pins, balloons, foam and paper spikes, set against Autumn/Winter 2010 menswear from Rick Owens, Ann Demeulemeester, John Galliano and Comme des Garçons.

Created by @nick_knight and @ruthhogben, Portent is a sensual and delicate exploration of romantic classicism, set against architectural details photographed around London’s Knightsbridge, Belgravia and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

With styling by @simonfoxton, the film unfolds as an allegorical love story expressed through Autumn/Winter 2009 menswear and womenswear from some of the world’s leading designers.
