The Palace in Marfa, Texas opened in 1905 as the town’s opera house and the only theater between El Paso and San Antonio. In the 1930s it suffered a fire and was revived as an Art Deco Picture Palace. It has survived world wars, segregation, and forty years of silence. And now, it has held its breath long enough.

We are here to reopen The Palace for the people.

Cinema is resistance. It is the place where differences sit together in the dark and discover something shared. Where a foreign language needs no translator because the image does the work. Where a community sees itself reflected and a visitor carries something home she will never quite shake. Where a rancher and a tourist leave changed by the same light.

Film is communal. It is confrontational. It is not content. And it deserves a room worthy of what it asks of us.

Art house cinema. Production studio. Bar. A home for the stories the West actually holds, not just the ones it gets sold. We will need your help.

What makes a home?

This was the central question. At the Eames House, Case Study House No. 8, the answer is everywhere. It’s in the light, the objets collected over a lifetime of curiosity, and the seamless threshold between life, work, and landscape.

For Charles and Ray Eames, a home was not a static object but a space in constant dialogue with the people inside it. This vision was inseparable from their guiding principle of bringing “the best, for the most, for the least”—a conviction that a supportive, well-designed and beautiful home was something everyone deserved.

These twin ideals drove our latest PBS Artbound documentary’s exploration of the entire Case Study Program and Arts & Architecture tome - which just received a Los Angeles Area EMMY nomination!

The film does a deep dive into this formative architectural movement through visits to the great standing works for the @StahlHouseOfficial designed by Pierre Koenig, to @CaseStudyHouse26 in San Rafael by Beverly Thorne and conversations with visionaries such as Dr. Raymond Richard Neutra and Elizabeth A.T. Smith.
