Charles and Ray #Eames moved into the @eameshouse in 1949 and lived there for the rest of their lives. The interior, its objects, and its collections remain as they were in Charles and Ray’s lifetimes. The home offered the couple space where work, play, life, and nature coexisted.

The Eameses wanted their Lounge Chair and Ottoman to have the “warm receptive look of a well-used first baseman’s mitt.” Often referred to as a twentieth-century interpretation of the nineteenth-century English club chair, this seating instantly became a symbol of comfort.

Behind the Eames aesthetic stood an equally stylish couple: Charles and Ray Eames, whose artistic partnership shook up both the world of design and the conventional notion of romantic collaboration.

Beautifully designed and richly illustrated, the book features both newly commissioned photography and a wealth of materials from the Eames Office’s archives – sketches, drawings, letters, and photographs – many of which are published here for the first time.

Accompanying the recently debuted exhibition of the same name, ‘The Eames Houses’ brings the couple’s human-centered approach to modernism firmly into the present.

The Eames Houses

Between 1945 and 1955, Charles and Ray Eames developed a body of architectural work that approached houses as adaptable, prefabricated systems for living. This exhibition offers the first comprehensive overview of their residential architecture, including several previously unpublished projects. It also marks the launch of the Eames Pavilion System by Kettal.
