🚨🚨🚨On Thursday next week (14.05.26) @mimauseful will host 26 of the UK’s brightest and best emerging artists, hipsters and dignitaries for the opening of the @new_contemporaries exhibition.

To celebrate this landmark launch, we’re incredibly grateful to them for giving us a free hand to programme and organise an after-party that showcases the incredible energy and dynamism of the Middlesbrough art scene.

With our friends @theauxiliaryprojectspace we’ll be presenting a night of leftfield, underground music, visual and performance art that we hope does justice to the astonishing creativity Teesside has to offer.

We’ve put a line-up together drawn from talent we’ve spotted at events organised by the many brilliant local curators, artists and organisations – like Steve Kirby’s powerhouse noise art label and nights for @industrialcoast, @bobbybenjamin genius @spagnorth dos, @teesside.dub.club bone-rattling dub sessions, @creativefactoryboro’s amazing pop-ups and of course The Auxiliary and @middlesbroughartweek, to name just a few.

Alongside performance art (@kea.eloisexo), The Future Sound of Teesside (@sebhewison and Haydn Landis) and @movingskye, there’ll be songs about love and Crocs (@gladtownghost ), killer drag (@reesewetherspooon ) and dub (@sir.racha.sound.system). @Steveotronics will be in charge of live Teesside inspired A/V and @sallycalledadam will be manning the decks playing Italo Disco, No Wave, Northern Soul and more.Oh, and there’ll be specially created “Hotshot & 01642” cocktails plus a RAFFLE! Imagine the most alternative working men’s club ever and you’ll be on the right track 

Sometimes, everything just comes together perfectly and that was the case with our deep listening session out on Coatham Marshes last week.

With the threat of rain, working with laptops, expensive field recording kit and no mains power meant there was some jeopardy 😬 ☔️ But it all came together beautifully and we all experienced a joyful immersion in nature through sound and the soundscape. The right people, the right place, the right pace. We even had a little dance in the drizzle at the end 💃🏼🕺🏼🌾

Massive thanks to @ne_true_north, @teeswildlife, @teesvalleyarts, @perks.sarah, rachelteate, and @cazzacopey for inviting us and supplying the tech we needed to make it happen. I’ve spent an amazing few days learning some stop frame animation and puppet-making skills from master puppeteer and animator @gretchen.mh.designs with a bunch of cool, talented people. We made a public safety/ hip hop track to raise awareness about Lithium Battery Safety (not a sentence I ever expected to hear myself say 😂)

In collaboration with @electricalsafetyfirst @helen.madden1 (who wrote the choral work), students from Saint Cuthberts Primary school, Windermere (who wrote and performed their own lyrics), and the local elders choir who sang Helen’s composition, me and @steveotronics have written and recorded a song to raise awareness of the dangers and fire risks of charging your vapes, e-bikes and other e-devices.

A somewhat random but totally delightful experience from start to finish, we’d like to thank all for their talent and efforts. As a personal sidebar, I think “Like Mentos in Coca Cola/ Thermal runaway, it’s all over” might be the crowning achievement of my own lyric writing career 😀😂
