Birds of Australia

Tonight Ryan, Peggy, and Dylan are releasing a new recording of improvisations entitled, Birds of Australia. As the title suggests, their music is inspired by the natural sounds of Australia, especially its wonderful birds. Individually, Ryan, Peggy, and Dylan have appeared on dozens of recordings and have toured and collaborated with musicians across Europe, North America, and Australia. The recording will be released on Made Now Music. Download cards will be available at the show.

AH!

Hendrix and Abi are two improvising musicians across many fields. From travelling together around the world to riding bikes around Naarm/Melbourne, they formed a unique bond as improvisers. Working with notable musicians such as Kris Davis and Taylor Ho Bynum, they have explored the possibilities of their instruments, both as soloists and in conversation with each other. AH!’s compositions reinterpret structure in improvisation and reveal hidden possibilities.

UNKNOWN MIRRORS blends vocals, Japanese koto and recorder through improvisation & composition to create a sound shaped by contemporary classical, folk, alternative pop, traditional Japanese, and Baroque influences. Sometimes energetic and upbeat, sometimes blissful and embracing come down to Bar Oussou to hear some tunes on 12 January. Free entry.

Horsley & Williams Duo (finally!) launch our debut album, Extinct Drones on Wednesday 6 November at The Brunswick Green, 8PM.

As lovers of the weird, Matthew Horsley and I celebrate Australian composers and improvisers and their diverse approaches to writing music. Join us to hear how far traditional instrumental practices can be pushed, broken and renewed from the comfort of the extinct drone sound-world that we call home. Featuring a solo set from the incredible Chloë Sobek to kick off the night. Then Matt, the amazing Carolyn Schofield (Fia Fiell) and I will take you into the extinct drone sphere.

⭐️ANNOUNCEMENT⭐️ LO-FI IMPROV this October in Melbourne, at Bar Open!

Naarm/Tokyo based creative music collective Namboku Records brings their long running music series Lo-fi Improv to Bar Open for the first time. Celebrating the release of a new album from duo Unknown Mirrors, featuring the Tokyo-based and internationally acclaimed koto player Miyama McQueen-Tokita and Naarm recorder player Ryan Williams, Lo-fi Improv brings together a community of some of Australia’s most celebrated improvisers and composers for a night of music that explores new pathways of experimentation across genres. The line-up will also feature pianist/composer and Artistic Director of the Australian Art Orchestra, Aaron Choulai with his Quintet performing experimental jazz based repertoire developed over Choulai’s 15 years in Tokyo, as well as Naarm/Tokyo based drummer Joe Talia, in duo with AAO Associate Artist and percussionist Sofia Carbonara on vibraphone. Join us in an event that captures a distinct language of gritty, experimental and connective creative music, developed across a shared community of artists between Japan and Australia.
