Nov 24-30we are artists in residence at @bundanontrust. Using the early spring retreat to develop and workshop new commissioned work by Flora Carbo for Virago + Flora.

I met @floracarbo six years ago when we were assigned as roommates at a music institute - presumably because our last names are next to each other in the alphabet. She was the first Australian musician I ever met. A couple years later, she cycled bedsheets and towels to me when I arrived with two suitcases to my first day living in Australia. From then to now Flora has been endlessly generous with her deep love of listening in community, and I am so grateful for her music and her friendship.

@magnolia.rohrer @whornpetrie and @bakunert of @virago.music have been my closest musical collaborators since 2018 and there is no national or intercontinental move that dampens our love for discovering sound with each other.

I am unbelievably excited for Virago to be coming to Australia, as we commission and play alongside none other than the one and only Flora Carbo. I have been dreaming of this project basically since I arrived to Melbourne and a few years later, it is happening.

This trip is possible through the support of @bundanontrust , @madenowmusic, @creative_vic , @creative.australia, and presenting partner to-be-announced. This trip feels like an incredible gift. The American fund we applied to had the entirety of their funding slashed by the current administration, as that program (supporting American artists to perform overseas) was not aligned with the current federal government. The American funding environment for the arts was already highly competitive and precarious pre this administration and it is now being torn apart. Many of the artists I most admire have and will continue to make work and run venues and festivals in the US because music is made of meaning, and we support each other in imagining and inhabiting the other worlds created by our music ("other worlds are possible" - Bridget @awe.society ).

Virago and Flora will be making music in Australia soon, here's some dates for now:

- Tuesday, December 2nd at Make It Up Club, Flora, Meg, BethAnne, Wesley, Sofia and friends

- Sunday, December 7th, premiere of Flora's new work by Flora and Virago - Melb TBA

𝙨𝙚𝙚𝙠 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙛𝙡𝙪𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚

The percussionists’ sound is transported away from its acoustic point of origin, mingling fluidly within the digital spin system that engulfs the audience. Bodies circulate and merge: “We experience ourselves less as isolated entities and more as oceanic eddies: I am a singular, dynamic whorl dissolving in a complex, fluid circulation” (Neimanis, 2017). The piece descends through the dataset in three stages from the ocean’s surface to nearly one kilometre underwater; the soundworld swells, an inverse energy cascade into the deep unknown.

Snippets from "Etude for a Kitchen," a work I made during my MMR, above. Was very grateful to share this work live in Ann Arbor and Chicago the last two weeks and now finally releasing this beautiful video made with the expertise of @cam.matheson and @pattelfer.
