During the final three days of the first source-to-sea descent of the Klamath River, around 100 youth and community leaders from Bolivia, Chile, China, New Zealand, and the Snake River Basin joined the expedition.

Among them were representatives from @riostorivers’ Amazonian Rivers Initiative and @kayakimun, hailing from the Bolivian Amazon and Chile’s Biobío River Basin. The group also included members of the Māori from Aotearoa (New Zealand), the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe through the @river.newe program, and Nimiipuu representatives with @youthsalmonprotectors

What united everyone was a shared experience: either living in communities impacted by dams or actively working to protect their rivers from being dammed.

The lessons from the Klamath dam removals offer a powerful example to river-dependent communities around the world fighting to keep their rivers free-flowing.

This past season reminded us to hold our community a little closer. We are grateful for all the friendships, collaborations, and those who believe in the work we do.

We lost Diane Yupe, our elder, our Shoshone-Bannock tribal representative along the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, she has left on her spiritual journey. . .

. . . Imagine her reaching for the sky swirling her hands down to the earth praying to damma apa as you make your way down the river May your journey be safe . . .

. . . May the creator bless you on your journey Diane, we will miss you dearly. When we stop at Indian Creek Guard Station, the kids and the rest of us will be looking for you under the pine where you would sit in the shade awaiting our arrival. All the kids running up to give you hugs, and seeing you there with a smile to see all us ShoBans and Pawnees. . .

. . . You will be missed dearly.

donations are welcomed for her family at this time of need

We’re getting ready to get on the river. Our kids learned how to put frames together today. Parenting success when your kids say “Hey, that was fun!”

Malia (10 years old) said “I can rig my own raft soon.”

Cold day -14*C/7*F with lots of snow ❄️ drifting around on the Rez. Hopefully the snowpack will make for a good runoff this year making new memories on the river.

Someday we will look back on River Newe when it started out of a shipping container. It will be the organization we need it to be, we believe this! . . .

. . . Our belief is because we have a wonderful support system of friends, family and relatives. They are made up of professions from guiding to the law and science to students and everyone in between.

Our youth and community greatly appreciate each and everyone of you who have volunteered, made donations, and some who do both. Big Oose—thank you! (Limit is 20 tags but there are so many more people and organizations we cherish)

Hi everyone, We wanted to share some support from @cnn on their Call to Earth Day #calltoearth November 10th. They picked us out of lots of posts and tags to acknowledge the hard work we do with our tribal youth and Bia Sogope--Mother Earth. For all of you out there supporting us and lifting up our story we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It's important and wonderful times we spend with our youth in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Without the support of many guides, friends, family, teachers and professors, small donations, and grants, our Tribal departments and leadership none of this would be possible. We must breach the four lower Snake River federal hydroelectric dams. Our salmon, salmon-based cultures including the Orca Nation need us to step up and do our part, protect them. (Figure credit @columbiariverkeeper Brett VandenHeuvel)

Many indigenous communities are facing environmental racism through acts of violence and destruction. The writing has been on the wall, the complete ignoring of Indigenous Knowledge and Lifeways are killing us all. @wetsuweten_checkpoint @giniwcollective

Cultural genocide, the anthropocene (human-caused species extinctions), fragmentation of habitat and loss of connectivity are subject areas where white supremacy (profiteering, private land ownership, capitalism, etc.) has direct overlap with these intersections.

Technology might help save us, but changes in human behavior will dwarf them because we know what we need to work on and we can do it today (living within our means, give more than you take, care for land as though it was your home; Mars is not an option).

We sent this out this morning and thought to also post about this.

Just to share a bit at this moment. We have a full 30 person Middle Fork Salmon River trip ahead of us and lots to get in order by June 25th when we will leave from here at River Newe headquarters on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. Our put-in will be the next day with 13 Shoshone-Bannock High School students. We are appreciative of your willingness to be of service to our community and organization.

Oose—thank you

“What if we as guides let go of time out there, and completely rethought our connection to the river and each other? How much do we actually cultivate and model that mentality? What if we encouraged guests to play as these Shoshone kids – in and out of the river as long as the sun was up. Sand in every crevice, shivering from being wet all day, grabbing a sandwich for dinner in the dark with the biggest grin.

As we overlooked Underwater Canyon one morning, one of the parents said: “This place is always here for you. Just like medicine, this river is just that for us. Whenever you need to come home, you can.” So, the next time we are able to return, we must remember how, indeed, the river is our medicine.

What will we give back to her, as she gives us so much?” Tess McEnroe
