Some sun. Some snow. Some fish. A lot of fish. A midpoint bailout for warm showers, softbeds, ribeye steaks and championship basketball. Good friends. World-class bullshitting. And hours upon hours to float, reflect, fling flies, and occasionally bump up against something approaching wisdom. A trip I won’t soon forget.

I’m honored to join my friends at @nimiipuuprotectingenvironment and @river.newe in calling for a regional solution on the Lower Snake River that restores salmon and steelhead runs, lifts up our communities and builds a stronger Northwest for the future. #northweststrong

Thanks to @americanrivers and @undersolen for your leadership on this project. And to @donofhern for making me look somewhat presentable, lockdown stache and all. 📸

I’m not really a birthday person, and I promise I’m not fishing for birthday wishes here, but I feel like I want to say something today. I’m 44, an age by which I thought I would have everything figured out. But all I’ve really figured out is how much I still have to learn. It’s been a hell of a year, this one. Not just with COVID-19 and racial injustice and rampaging fires and everything else rightly dominating our collective conscious, but also one of the most personally challenging times I can remember. I’ve been pushed like never before as a dad, husband, friend, son, brother, professional and citizen. Some days I feel like I’m doing a pretty good job. Other days I feel completely inadequate. Today I mostly feel grateful for all the wonderful people in my life and thankful for the sometimes unruly ways this journey forces us to grow and become better people. Also, there is still much to celebrate. Love you people.❤️All forward!

I wasn’t dancing like this a month ago. I probably won’t be dancing like this a month from now. (I should probably never dance like this.) But despite all the sh$t of this year, this is how I felt on the third river trip in a month, a magical honeymooner with my sweetheart. Now it’s time to get back to work, to get serious, to double down on the hard stuff. But maybe let’s not forget that joy is still okay. Okay. 🔊🎶🤣

Bad weather/bad fishing/good scenery/good company. 2019 was a lesson in taking the good with the bad, muddling through and celebrating every little win. This was a fine and fitting way to end it.

On Friday these 8th graders walked out of school to ask if we could leave them an inhabitable planet to live on. This weekend I was reminded of the strength and resilience of our young people, and of our responsibility to care for this one-and-only Earth we are fortunate to call home. #climatestrike #climatechange

Then and now, now and then. So happy to reach the He Devil summit with Thing #2 three years after standing on the same spot with Thing #1. I’m a little more gray in the muzzle, but glad to know I can still keep up with the youngsters in the mountains. More trip pics on the way.

Idaho/Alberta/BC. What you will not see here are the mornings (3? 4?) packing up camp in the rain, the cooler that leaked mustard water in the back of the car, a hangry search for food in the town that closed at 5, or the feral horses stomping around our tent at 2am, but those scenes shall not be forgotten, either.
