THANK YOU to everyone for participating in the first Found Media VJ Battle Royale (既有媒介VJ大战) last weekend!!

We split the entire venue in half, where 24 VJs, divided into 2 teams, went head to head showcasing their VJ skills using publicly available videos only. Each round lasted 10 minutes, and the audience voted by physically standing (dancing) in front of the VJ they enjoyed more!!!

The videos played were… all over the map. news broadcasts, demoscene videos, Chainsaw Man, old computer graphics, Hatsune Miku, Code Geass, math and science lectures, Dreamcast, Nintendo 64, FF7, bubble sort, high-speed dogfighting, toasts falling over, Empresses in the Palace, Street Fighters, bilibili memes, 还珠格格,华强买瓜, 郭德纲... the list goes on and on

Because of the “browser only” rule, everyone got incredibly creative with their setups. Some techniques included: MIDI controlled browser plugins, turntable-scratch simulator plugins, custom AppleScript controlling browser window animations, DV camera feedback, TouchDesigner with browser, livecoding with Hydra, macOS’s built-in zoom feature, humble YouTube keyboard shortcuts, custom web sequencers that loop video to the beat, all kinds of hand-coded and vibe-coded plugins… etc etc.

Some techniques included: MIDI controlled browser plugins, turntable-scratch simulator plugins, custom AppleScript controlling browser window animations, DV camera feedback, TouchDesigner with browser, livecoding with Hydra, macOS’s built-in zoom feature, humble YouTube keyboard shortcuts, custom web sequencers that loop video to the beat, all kinds of hand-coded and vibe-coded plugins… etc etc.

Last month, we hosted the Shanghai edition of [[alternative reality]]: JAM!, a global game jam we organized together with node hosts across London, Tokyo, Taipei, The Hague, and New York, all running simultaneously around the world.

25 participants joined us here in Shanghai for two days of experimenting, discussing and making, exploring what “alternative reality" games could be when they exist in the space between the digital/fictional and the real.

We kicked things off with workshops our organizers had designed, alongside an inspiring talk by Matt Adams from @blasttheory.
Together with participants online and across all our node cities, we ended up making over 65 games in total 🎮

It was our first time organizing something at this scale, and we are still a little in awe of what came out of it. huge thanks to our co-organizers and friends @studioplayfool @ferran.games @farfama.har @janarom @kaho.art.games @cyrulene @bdon @queeniwu for coming on this journey with us and bringing it to life in your cities 🚏🚏

and to @morning.fyi for supporting the whole project ♪(*^^)o∀*∀o(^^*)♪
And @freitaglab @vibram for supporting our shanghai venue.

🚏𝘾𝘼𝙇𝙇 𝙁𝙊𝙍 𝙋𝘼𝙍𝙏𝙄𝘾𝙄𝙋𝘼𝙉𝙏𝙎! 🚏
We are inviting game creators and players from around the world to design and play [[alternative reality]] games during [[alternative reality]] WEEK! — a series of game jam and play events taking place over two weekends, dedicated to playful experiences that spill out of the screen and into the real world.

“Wait, do you mean Augmented Reality (AR)? “
Nope!

“Do you mean Alternate Reality Game (ARG)?”
..Well, kind of!
Alternative, as in alternative games, alternative tech, alternative media, alternative infrastructure: another, perhaps more radical way of engaging with what’s already here. We are inspired by practices including alternate reality games, pervasive games, immersive theatre, performance art, public interventions, net art, urban Games, LARPs, etc., but we’re not precious about genre.

The goal is to design playful experiences that combine game mechanics with the real world. No-tech, low-tech, or high-tech approaches all welcome.

🗓️ When?

play a choose-your-own-adventure game on ice surface on the frozen Chaobai River.

A choose-your-own-adcenture game where objects are frozen beneath the ice. At each node, players must choose one item. Different choices lead to different branches, but only one path takes them from Hebei to Beijing. (Hebei is an adjacent province to Beijing, separated only by the Chaobai River, but it has not seen this proximity translated into equal development, as Beijing’s dominance has reinforced economic and social disparities between the two.)

As part of:
"Completely Wrong" Exhibition on Frozen Chao Bai River
全错 | 潮白河冰上展
🗓 2026.1.30–2.2, 13:30–22:00 (game's official tour on Feb 1st 4pm)
📍 By the west gate of Banyan Tree Bay Community, Yanjiao Town, Sanhe, Hebei

Curated by: 粗ZOO art group

Come by if you are around ❄️ ⚠️ Please be careful on the ice surface. There have been multiple accidents on this river. And it gets more dangerous after dark:(

On a high-speed train 🚄 several writers wanted by the state are hiding among the passengers. They each have to finish an urgent short story at their own seat, but they can’t let anyone notice that they are writing, and at the same time they are trying to catch the others doing the writing...
Last weekend, we playtested a stealth(?) + creative writing 🚄📝game idea on a 3-hour high-speed train (高铁) from Shanghai to Zhejiang where players took on the role of writers on the run from a fascist state, doing everything they could to finish their story without being discovered........

MØRNING. We’re excited to announce the latest recipient of the MØRNING People Fund: @rect_repair

Based in Shanghai, [[rect*]]repair is an art–game collective building experimental games, alternative game jams and public events that blur play, fiction and community. Mostly self-organised, always collaborative, their work lives in the gaps between digital and physical worlds.

With the fund, they’ll launch a global ARG game jam, connecting independent art and game spaces across borders. Powered by low-tech and alternative infrastructures: NFC tags, urban fixtures, local networks, ham radios, the platform promotes play that creates friction, intimacy and site-specific meaning.

Led by @jyolyyyu and @v10101a , [[rect*]]repair see ARGs as a vital, overlooked form of play: real people, building worlds together, face to face — at a moment when that kind of connection feels more urgent than ever.

→ Next round opens in the NY. Start prepping NØW

recap from an iconic collaboration with @boshisplace !! Thank you all for waking up at 10am, waiting in line (!!!) on the streets at @cedarshanghai to play cool games and draw weird signs to communicate with the other side of the portal 🕳️ 🥺

we also had a chaotic time messaging through a DIY fax machine made by @v10101a 👀 (it worked but the printer broke down half way)

The games are still on display in the @cedarshanghai office until end of this week! @v10101a built a web os to hold the games together, which you can visit at
rect-repair.github.io/cedar-os

huge shout out to @boshisplace boshis @hatimb00 @ joey @sewonbae @itsbibs_ <3 hope to see you all again soon!!!

🕳️ Shanghai <> NYC portal 🕳️ also made possible by a wonderful duo-city setup team @v10101a @jyolyyyu @yueminanada @s4y____ @deimos_li @vvusu

we also had a chaotic time messaging through a DIY fax machine made by @v10101a 👀 (it worked but the printer broke down half way)

Thanks for playing our site-specific arg "[Emotion Beach System] Simulation Resort" @system_shanghai@modernartmuseum_sh on August 23rd, 2025.
The game ran quietly alongside the party, between drinks, dancing, and conversation, players followed clues, exchanged passwords, and tested whether escape was possible. It was an experiment in running a game in the background of a real space, where the real party itself became the backdrop of this worldbuilding.
Some fun moments:
- players were spontaneously helping each other and starting conversations without us prompting any social encouragement.
- some players enjoyed interacting with NPCs so much (especially the fake security guards) that they started pretending to be NPCs and started tricking other players.
-out of around 70 groups who participated (about ~100 players), about 50 successfully escaped.
- the actor playing “the body” said the experience felt meditative, lying there while players flipped him over, and even someone attempting CPR. And lots of people were apologising and telling jokes to him before searching for clues on his body.
- NPC performers told us they enjoy the game a bit too much and dont want it to end.
- There were 6 branches in total, the longest chain had 3 linked clues, the shortest just 1.
...
Thanks to everyone @system_shanghai who helped us prepare this, and to all the NPC performers who brought the game to life.
