This presentation explores the role of design in craft as a vessel for tradition and memory, examining how material culture preserves and reinterprets heritage. Through the case study of artisanal practices in Trinidad Carnival, Cherry-Ann uncovers how craft embodies ancestral knowledge, identities, and evolving cultural narratives.
“The artisanal practices of Carnival in Trinidad have been a site for storing memories of Indigenous harvest festivals, of remembering African masquerade, and resistance against oppressions. However, [...] we seem to have fallen out of love with our histories, our triumphs, to favor someone else’s story of who we might be, [...] because the current versions of Trinidad carnival that are marketed, promoted, and prototyped are devoid of the traditional masquerade. [...] Our carnival costumes, which were once locally made, are now being exported to be manufactured in China or the USA. Our designs no longer hold stories deep with meaning and traditions to pass on to another generation, but they copy children’s movies and are closer to cosplay than our authentic representations of ourselves.”
🪢 This event was part of the two-day symposium “On the Seam: Anthropology, Design, and Situated Practices,” a collaboration between the platform for design politics Futuress @futuress_org and the Department of Design History and Theory at the University of Applied Arts Vienna @atdesigntheory, initiated as part of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF @fwf_at) research project “Design Anthropology: Cold War Industrial Design & Development.”
