🧩 This is the first prototype of my real-time computational model of cognitive and affective state dynamics built from EEG, modeling adaptive vs. maladaptive regulation, and visualizing state transitions and predictive features prior to collapse/overload.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been building a real-time system in @touchdesigner for modeling cognitive and affective state from EEG data.

🧠 The goal is to represent brain activity as a dynamic system rather than a set of separate signals, and to build the foundational model for the application of my neuroscience research to real-life therapeutic and diagnostic technologies, as well as embodied and experiential interventions.

🌐 The model combines:

• Valence, arousal, and engagement (DEAP)
• Frequency-band features (alpha/beta/theta/gamma)
• Derived metrics like cognitive load, attention regulation, and integration
• And higher-order properties like stability, velocity, organization, overload, regulatory capacity, and agency

📈 Variance and temporal derivatives are also tracked, so it shows not just what state the system is in, but how it is changing and when it is approaching instability.

🔬 From this, several patterns start to emerge, including:

✅ High load with strong regulation → performance
❌ High load with weak regulation → overload

✅ High stability with positive valence → optimal states
❌ High stability with negative valence → maladaptive persistence

❌ High velocity with low organization → fragmentation
🚨 Rising variance → early instability

The particle field is directly driven by these relationships:

• Density reflects coherence
• Dispersion reflects fragmentation
• Motion reflects rate of change
• Color reflects combined affective and cognitive state

📊 If you pause the video at different moments, the relationships become more legible—how stability, load, regulation, and organization interact, and how transitions unfold over time.

🔮 This is an early prototype, but a step toward modeling cognitive state as a continuous, dynamic system, including how regulation and agency emerge under changing conditions.

TD_exp001_Hebbian-Flow

Audio-reactive visualization of neuronal growth patterns based on Hebbian principles of neuroplasticity.

This is the first of a hopefully ongoing series of experiments with @touchdesigner as I work toward biosensing, neuromodulation, and visual feedback interfaces for state-approximating computational models derived from my research on network dynamics between D2 dopamine receptor circuitry and long-term potentiation (LTP), with implications for PTSD, chronic pain, and other disorders of maladaptive plasticity.

On the tail of yesterday’s 1st of December Sagittarius new moon, and ahead of my 31st bday tomorrow (12/3), I am sharing the lecture I gave for for @hybridbodylab's Cornell graduate class back in October.

I shy from sharing this because I have been uncomfortable to be seen or heard much over the past few years. I experienced a complete reconfiguration of my life, identity, and basic functioning that has made it hard to feel comfortable with how I can represent myself right now. I did not feel prepared to do something like this, let alone talk about my work and history in detail. I was nervous throughout the talk, and felt like I was running on 2% brain power, but it ended up being quite significant to me. So even though I feel hesitant to share, I will willfully mark this milestone. ( ՞ ܸ. .ܸ՞ )

I’ve never before delineated the evolution of my project, QUALIATIK, from its inception on my 20th birthday to the present day. This lecture became a really rewarding opportunity to reflect on everything as I near what I hope to be a sea change in the relentlessly transitional expanse of the past few years. Even further, it enabled me to pull together many threads and ideate onwards.

In a way, it is a kind of retrospective on a decade of work, changes, probing for luminance in the dark, and life being lived. The first half is a reluctant but earnest effort to introduce myself + the background of my project. The second half is a semi-structured exposé on special interests and personal meta-theory: tattooing as ritual, my neuroscience research, and a fascination with interfaces of all kinds—physical, metaphysical, empathic, biochemical. I am an expert in none, but am alive always in the connections and their synthesis.

“the process of writing and cultivating this record was one of tremendous excavation and perseverance through some of the most trying times of my life, physically and psychologically. “discarnate” began when i was squatting in a windowless basement surrounded by the stench of poisoned rat bodies decaying in the walls. my job during this year was caring for an extremely ill nine-year-old girl, and at the same time i was also trying to learn how to navigate life with a tailbone injury that would go on to disable me from sitting nearly at all for the next two years.

caring for the little girl was the true center point of the growth that occurred in that time—the distinct emotion it spawned was the need for empathetic lucidity in the face of morbid struggle, and the power gained from becoming as soft as possible under the hardest of circumstances.

cradling her in my arms as she would scream and writhe in agony, attempting to comfort and console her through any means possible; looking into her big brown eyes as i would do the medical duty of pumping gas out of her stomach cavity through a syringe to relieve her of some pain; watching her body language soften as her cheek was stroked or she received some sign of supportive affection.

this distinct need for emotional gentleness in the face of inhumane physical suffering allowed me to lean deeper into my own pain to unearth “discarnate”. i hope it will be a guiding hand for you to enter your own vulnerability, that it will provide the closeness, comfort, and warmth to help you navigate your deepest unknowns.”
