@conor.russomannoβs TED Talk featured a never-before-seen demo of assistive neurotech:
With climactic success, @cbayerlein , activist and neuro-hacker living with spinal muscular atrophy, flies a drone over the audience.
Using OpenBCIβs Neurofly toolkit and the Varjo Aero VR headset, he showed the power of assistive neurotech + wearable sensors to extend oneβs brain/body functions.
This and other advances in neurotech will open doorways to new interactions with computers, and change how we interact with computers just as much as AI.
Though Christian wore a custom Galea headset, you can use off-the-shelf OpenBCI hardware to replicate his joystick controls for your own project.
True to our open-source roots, we made a D-I-Y tutorial for those looking to #Neurofly at home β¬οΈ

βIβm going to stop talking about it, and weβre gonna show you...β
Watch Christian Bayerlein fly a drone over the TED2023 audience using hardware and software created by OpenBCI.
This software is also now open source and available here:

Users will have the ability to create a personalized joystick that detects muscle movement and responds accordingly through the OpenBCI GUI, similar to the demonstration performed by Christian in the 2023 OpenBCI TED Talk.

Imagine a world where our everyday interactions are enhanced by advanced sensors.
The beginnings of that future are seen in the sensors OpenBCI put together in Galea, a XR-sensor fusion headset prototype.
The next frontier is neurotech: OpenBCI's Galea headset, along with advances in assistive controls, points to a wild, wearable road ahead.
"Right now, it's enough of a struggle to convince people of the value of VR and AR and wearable visual tech.
But improving the ways we can eventually interface with spatial computing or the real world might be part of the answer to how VR/AR could evolve into something far more meaningfulβ¦and possibly unsettling.
It already feels like personal tech is developing a deeper relationship with our senses and our brains." - says Scott Stein, senior tech writer for CNET.

π§ π§ββοΈ Can #Yoga Help Relieve #Period Pain? #Brainwave Data Says Yes (with Help from OpenBCI!)
In a new study, researchers explored the effects of yoga asanas on primary dysmenorrhea (menstrual pain), but with a twist: the impact was measured not just through physical symptoms, but through brainwave changes captured via #EEG.
Using the #OpenBCI Cyton Board, the team recorded EEG signals from participants before and after a series of yoga sessions. The data showed significant shifts in frequency ranges associated with pain and stress, offering concrete neurophysiological evidence of yogaβs calming and pain-relieving effects.
π The EEG recordings were further processed using deep learning models, which successfully classified pre- and post-yoga brain states with over 90% accuracy, validating the measurable impact of mind-body practices on brain activity.
This research underscores the growing role of accessible #neurotechnology, like OpenBCI, in making brain-computer interface studies more scalable and affordable across domains like womenβs health, pain management, and holistic medicine.
Weβre proud to see OpenBCI hardware supporting innovative #research at the intersection of #neuroscience and wellbeing!

We LOVE to read out-of-the-box applications for #OpenBCI boards. Like this research that uses OpenBCI to measure #EEG in SHEEP! π π§
π What Itβs About
This paper introduces a novel interventional brain-computer interface (#BCI) that records long-term intracranial EEG in a quadruped mammal (sheep), while accurately classifying its motionβlying down, standing, or walking.
π‘ Minimally Invasive Innovation
Instead of traditional open brain surgery (craniotomy), the system uses vein-based electrode insertion into the superior sagittal sinus, close to the motor cortex.
π Strong Results
The system achieved 86% accuracy in motion prediction, with stable signal quality over several monthsβno surgical implant damage observed.
π¬ Why It Matters
This technique proves that minimally invasive, long-term BCIs are feasible in mammals, opening up safer pathways for chronic #neuro monitoring and future clinical BCI applications.

The #brain as it's never before seenβand a big leap forward for #neuroscienceβ
This cubic MILLIMETER of brain tissue contains 200,000 cells, four kilometers of axons β the branches that reach out to other cells, and 523 million synapses β the connection points between cells.
By combining advanced electron microscopy, brain activity recordings, and #AI, the MICrONS research program constructed a 3-D model of a visual cortex segment, the largest wiring diagram and functional map of the brain to date.
It's not just the most complicated neuroscience experiment ever attemptedβit's a transformative scientific feat, akin to AlphaFold (AI-powered prediction of protein structure) in 2024 or the Human Genome Project in 2003!
The MICrONS ultra-detailed map of the brain's intricate wiring opens new avenues for understanding both normal brain function and the underpinnings of neurological disorders.
Thanks to the @alleninstitute for Brain Science, Baylor College of Medicine, Princeton University, and other contributors to the MICrONS program.
#Neurons are often shown as solitary figuresβone cell with spindly dendrites stretching into empty space.
The simplified image helps us understand a neuronβs shape, but it leaves out the context of the brainβs densely interconnected structure.
Thanks to the MICrONS project led by the @alleninstitute for Brain Science, we now have the most detailed 3D map of mammalian neurons ever created π¬
Their high-resolution model reveals just how densely packed the #brain really is. In the visual cortex.
100,000 neurons cram into an area smaller than a grain of sand π€―
This tightly packed network isnβt #chaoticβitβs a #masterpiece of efficiency!
#Nature has fine-tuned the brain over millions of years to be an extraordinarily efficient information-processing system.
The human brain is estimated to carry out a billion-billion calculations per second (an exaflop!), all while using just 20 watts of powerβthe same as a small light bulb π‘
By studying how the brain manages this kind of performance, scientists are gaining valuable insights into building smarter, more efficient computing systems.
