Tucked deep in southern Libya, the Am Alma Lakes look like they have no business being there.
Surrounded by nothing but sweeping Sahara dunes, these striking pools of vivid blue and green water are only reachable after a long trek through open sand — and then, without warning, palm trees appear and the desert simply breaks. The contrast is jarring in the best way.
With virtually no tourism, it stays untouched and eerily still. A place where the desert doesn’t just border water — it surrenders to it, quietly.

Malik Al-Sultan, a 28-year-old freelance digital creator from Saudi Arabia, spent over a year planning a road trip that most people would write off as impossible — driving his Toyota Land Cruiser pickup more than 5,600 miles from Saudi Arabia all the way to Norway to fulfill a lifelong dream of seeing the northern lights. Rather than flying, he chose the road so he could experience 19 countries along the way, passing through Kuwait, Turkey, Germany, and Denmark before crossing into the Arctic.
When the aurora finally appeared above him after three weeks on the road and temperatures dropping to minus 26°C, he said no photo or video could have prepared him for it. “There’s a deep stillness, a sense of awe. You feel small — in the best possible way.” He added that the journey itself became just as meaningful as the destination: “I will always remember both together, because one could not exist without the other for me.”
