Oriental Melon
We’re interested in how traditional culture and Eastern philosophy connect with the digital world, and our work explores this intersection.

TONIGHT: CHINABOT PRESENTS KASAI + NEO GEODESIA + ORIENTAL MELON + HWXXNG
Chinabot return to OTO with KASAI, Neo Geodesia, Oriental Melon and HWXXNG - a line-up moving through Japan, South Korea, France and the UK, gathered by a platform that has been changing the dialogue around Asian music since 2017.
Chiba-born, Kyoto-based KASAI works between ancient folk styles and contemporary electronic forms, pulling traditional materials towards footwork, juke and high-velocity club structures without flattening either side. NEO GEODESIA approaches electronic music through unstable textures, digital processing and fractured sonic environments, while ORIENTAL MELON’s audiovisual practice opens out from Berlin and South Korea through electronics, image, performance and club-adjacent experimentation.
HWXXNG folds DJ and production work into the line-up, joining a night that moves between folk memory, digital audiovisual work, experimental electronics, footwork, juke and signal-heavy sounds.
Chinabot has become one of the most vital platforms for artists reworking assumptions around Asian music, not as a single sound or genre, but as a field of artists, labels, histories and practices pushing in multiple directions at once.

@Oriental.Melon is a digital audio-visual artist duo composed of Jaeho Hwang and Sena Oh from South Korea, based in Berlin. Their work fuses traditional and contemporary elements, exploring the intersection of Eastern philosophy and digital culture. By navigating the complexities of cultural identity, they act as a bridge between traditional practices and innovative digital expressions, fostering dialogue that deepens appreciation for both realms.
Sena Oh is a Korea-born, Berlin-based visual explorer. Her creative approach is fueled by a deep fascination with immersive digital experiences and their underlying processes. She focuses on re-examining mixed and overused digital interfaces and media, experiencing and resolving distortions that arise from digital convergence and media interactions. Through this process, she weaves stories with a pataphysical perspective, blurring the boundaries between reality and unreality, logic and illogic, and Eastern and Western cultures. Additionally, she is part of the electronic music label “Hundertrecord” as a visual artist.
Jaeho Hwang (aka HWXXNG and also performing on the night)is a Berlin-based DJ and producer from South Korea whose practice explores sound as a site of cultural memory, identity, and futurism. Defining his work as Asian-Core / K-Core, he merges industrial club music with traditional Korean instrumentation, ritual chants, and East Asian sonic archives.

⚡Tradition Transformed Through Tech ⚡
We’re honoured to be part of Peckham Digital 2025 with live audiovisual work Sangyeo – Digital Metempsychosis. ✨
This 35-minute performance reinterprets Korean traditional funeral rituals through a contemporary digital lens. Blending Sangyeo-sori (funeral chants) with game-inspired soundscapes, AI-generated visuals, and drone choreography, the piece imagines a speculative posthumous journey of the soul in the digital realm.
By merging sacred ritual with new technologies, Oriental Melon explore themes of afterlife, automation, and transformed tradition, offering a powerful, diasporic vision of Asian future aesthetics. 🌌⚡

“Oriental Melon” is a Berlin-based hybrid audiovisual artist duo from South Korea, composed of Jaeho Hwang and Sena Oh. We reinterpret traditional metaphors through a future-oriented lens, merging cultural heritage with digital media across sonic and visual platforms. Grounded in a diasporic perspective, our work experiments with futuristic narratives of East Asian identity and seeks to envision new aesthetics for an Asian future.
„<Sangyeo-Digital Metempsychosis>“ is a 35-40 minute live audiovisual performance that reinterprets Korean traditional funeral rituals through a contemporary digital framework, based on research into the evolving forms of conventional ceremonies.
We explore how rituals once regarded as solemn and sacred—such as funerals and memorial ceremonies—are becoming blurred and transformed in the context of the AI era and Industry 5.0.
The performance merges “Sangyeo-sori,” the traditional funeral chants sung during funeral processions, with game-inspired and digital soundscapes. Symbols of longevity and immortality from Korean traditional patterns are reimagined as AI-generated visual language and 3D digital models, depicting a speculative posthumous journey of the soul in the digital realm. The act of physically carrying the coffin—once performed communally—is replaced by drone operation, symbolising contemporary realities such as population decline, nuclear families, and increasing automation.
This multidisciplinary work experiments with how forgotten rituals might be revived within digital virtual spaces. Grounded in a diasporic perspective, it proposes a new vision of Asian future aesthetics. Through its layered composition of sound, drone movement, and digital visuals, the piece explores the concepts of “afterlife” and “transformed tradition” through a hybrid narrative structure.
