GENTLE LEASH mix #8 w/ Minkyoung Byun X Cho Ari
02.04. • 21.00-22.00 • @hallo.radio
This 60-minute radio experiment features 14 musical compositions by Minkyoung Byun organically interwoven with Cho Ari’s text, <on the plane>.
It explores how memories and recollections are formed
within lingering sensations and shifting temporality, ultimately evoking a state of indeterminate nostalgia.
Minkyoung Byun @wonderminkyoung
Minkyoung Byun is a Seoul-based composer and pianist,
including the album <Nocturnal Reveries> . Her music focuses on moments when sensations and images, past but not yet fully extinguished, resurface within the present. Rather than moving in a linear progression, her piano melodies and soundscapes connect through loose textures, organizing time into a
sensory state built upon reverberation and lingering echoes.
Cho Ari @qri.cho
Cho Ari is an artist and researcher based in Hamburg. Her fictional essay, <on the plane> , depicts the psychological disintegration of a protagonist during the physical journey of a flight to Argentina. In this work, past memories and present delusions intertwine, tracing a process of mental fragmentation of the self. The text focuses on memory shards that circulate without a clear origin, as well as the uncanny, fluid nature produced by dissonant temporalities and multilayered perceptions.

Akazi,Barocco,Arirang
Starting from the concept of eco-memory, Cho Ari‘s wall and sound installation Akazi, Barocco, Arirang approaches two interwoven biographies: that of Korean nurse Lee Kye-soon, who migrated to Hamburg in the 1960s as a so-called guest worker, and that of the acacia tree, a species that spread along colonial routes between Europe and Asia. Both embody transgenerational trajectories of uprooting and transformation. Through these intertwined stories, the artist embarks on a sensual search for traces, in which memory appears not only as a human and linguistic phenomenon, but as something that circulates through our environment.

16-21/04: 13.00-19.00
Cho Ari is an interdisciplinary artist. She explores the complex interplay of embodiment, materiality, and non-human agency within shifting ecological and perceptual landscapes. She challenges fixed frameworks of consciousness and relationality, cultivating spaces where fluid identities and alternative modes of existence can coexist. Her inquiry extends to metaphysical forces that shape and animate both physical and digital networks between organisms, broadening dialogues on interspecies dynamics and future-oriented ecologies.
<Not yet anymore>, 2023-2024, Video installation, 7:59
The momentary sense and immersion that we essentially experience through the approach to dimensional transition, and the experience it derives from, are explored through moving images, selection of stills, and voiceover.
<Plunge>, 2025, UV print on aluminium plate, 30x30cm
Before the blue shards touch the retina, a centerless force pulls the body inward.
The boundary between inside and out dissolves, leaving only one direction—toward disappearance.
In collaboration with Kreativ Gesellschaft Hamburg.
Presented by GENTLE LEASH.

<NOT YET ANYMORE>, 2023, video installation, 8:14
The momentary sense and immersion that we essentially experience through the approach to dimensional transition, and the experience it derives from, are explored through moving images, selection of stills, a voice-over and electric sounds.
The video creates a setting for a transcendental experience where the sense of time and space is lost and all fixed patterns are broken. It depicts a journey in which time and space are absorbed and integrated somewhere in between.
