Island: Inward Routes unto the Memory of the Improvised

The call came early this year, before Springtime, just as the winter ghosts were melting away. Thanks to a word of mouth recommendation from erstwhile collaborator and amazing artist and friend @fahrtrichtunglinks , I was invited to once again to bring cooking in one of the biggest stages: Concertgebouw Brugge, a place whose walls have witnessed many great jazz and choreographies.

What unfolded there became one of the most solemn renditions of @nowherekitchen Cooking on the mainstage of the Grand Hall — I conducted the musicality of pots, pauses, gestures, anecdotes, silences. Heat without fire. A kitchen without walls. The ancient jazz of cooking served as the contemporary philosophy.

The three-hour 'one shot only' act took place during Let Us Cook, a special event curated by five young talents that brought unconventional acts together. And as has become 'ritual' in my performances, the proverbial kitchen converged many generations, memories and fantasies. The kitchen was at once domestic and small, yet ceremonial, almost sacred. Microhistories simmering slowly, where labor turned into language, where care became choreography. The weight of matriarchal genealogy mixed with the lightness of play. We were all breathing, listening and living together in one 'Island'.

And then there was music. A set of impromptu jazz standards by yours truly, with the amazing @koengsmn on piano and @devongatesmusic on bass and vocals as a fitting end, or shall I say, beginning of the meal. It was quite something to literally 'digest'. Grateful for such an opportunity.

Design, score and concept by @pepedayaw

Special thanks and love to the curators Mulch-imédia collective especially @cionaval and her migrant rice cooker, together with @koengsmn , Phoebe Riley Law, @elliemurphyweise, and David Wolfswinkel. And the awesome crew of @concertgebouwbrugge led by Valentina Broes and Joonas de Rover.

And thanks to the amazing folks of Brugge and to the migrant guests who came! <3

The year is coming to a close. I am both humbled and thankful to be alive at this moment. For very personal reasons that I wish not to make public yet, except to say that this year has been serving its life lessons and they are bittersweet. My form of resistance was to stay mostly offline (hence the relative lack of posts from my side), where it has been more quiet, loving, subdued and healing... and it is where I chose to be most of the time. If there is anything I wish for anyone reading this, it would be that: some good quality offline rest.

Nevertheless, I wish to express my gratitude to the opportunities that came this year. They were not many, but I am very happy and proud of the few creations and offerings that took place. For they represent for me a renewed and more sincere commitment towards myself. Especially after the last four years have felt more like a blur (more about that on my newsletter).

Last summer, I got featured in Vogue (Philippine edition). An honor and pleasure to be side by side fellow esteemed artists, movers and shakers with Filipino heritage living in Berlin, some of whom I have collaborated with and known since I moved here 12 years ago, @rosacordillera, lizzamaydavid, @thelynhan, @stephaniecomilang, @alvincollantesdance and many fresh and upcoming faces. Of course, in any subjective lists, there will always be exclusions, and I want to recognize here the great contributions of the likes of Renan Laruan @rgll____ , @tengal , @alfreyabaklab , @melmichaelmontajes , @isatabasuares and many more who in their elements have been creating wonders among their respective socioscapes. Creativity is indeed one of the Filipino's synonyms wherever they go. And I have much to say about that with my own life so far.

Much appreciation to @annabernice_ (writing), @augustineparedes (photos), @alexisconvento (food) and their team for making it happen, and it was a lovely experience. And thanks to @voguephilippines, for the very first time, my beloved mother bought a copy of the magazine! Salamat po!

LET US COOK... ONCE MORE.
22 March, Concertgebouw Brugge (see their Insta for details)

Tomorrow, I will be welcoming the Spring from the lovely city of Brugge,
where I will be performing / improvising together with Koen Gijsman @koengsmn and Devon Gates @devongatesmusic

in my piece called 'Island', a musical tasting / slow cooked reduction that marks the end of more than decade of performing cooking as the shapeshifting act Nowhere Kitchen @nowherekitchen

12 springs ago, I was making impromptu dinners out of what I found in people’s fridges, tomorrow, 22 March, I will bring this act, once more, on the biggest stage yet. All I can say is, wow, who would have thought?! For me, it would be the end of an era, and the beginning of something new (stay tuned).

Join us @concertgebouwbrugge in an event 'Let us Cook' curated by @cionaval and four other young curators. Special thanks to the amazing crew of Concertgebouw Brugge, the lovely curators, and special mention to @fahrtrichtunglinks for making the connection.

Photos: 1. Wilson Santinelli, Le Marche; 2. Andi Weiland, Roter Salon, Volkbuehne, Berlin; 3. Ze de Paiva, Ballhaus Naunynstrasse, Berlin

Another year is about to pass. It's time to say goodbye to the old and welcome the new. Here are some impressions of two leftover interventions led by @pepedayaw that took place this year. See you next year in 2024 for yet a (re)new(ed) season of Nowhere Kitchen.

Some reflections from @pepedayaw
"The idea of speaking in front of a public used to intimidate me when I was a kid. While on the contrary, I had vague memories that when I was younger, I wanted to become a priest. Or at least that's what my family used to tell me. Something about the priest's solemnity calmed me and yet to say something in public felt mortifying. Is fear a sort of protective membrane that veneers our deepest darkest dreams? As I enter a new cycle, I take this time to give thanks to the wonderful serendipities that cooking with leftovers has brought me, somehow it gave me a voice, and most importantly, something to say. I am grateful for the opportunity to use my talent and share love in this 'migrant' unconventional way."

Community Session at @feldfuenf in Berlin with @anzetteln_ / March 2023

'Clay, Salt, Rock' Research Session at @ngbk_berlin (neue Gesellschaft für bildende Kunst) / November 2023

Special Thanks:
Laura & Sharmila from @anzetteln_
Vincent from @ngbk_berlin
for the opportunity

To @4nahat and @tawanshishi for your hospitality and camaraderie
To @luterfilho for the impromptu variation no.555 with @pepedayaw
To @k01301_ for the value added support

ZINE OUT NOW!

Tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday catch @pepedayaw for a spontaneous hang-out and meet & greet and get a signed copy of ‘The Philosophy of Cooking with Leftovers’, a limited edition zine about the Nowhere Kitchen project.

Looking forward to see you! <3

Thursday 05 Oct (Neukölln): 4-6pm at FlyBykes, Donaustraße 40, 12043 Berlin. 6-9pm at @refugeworldwide Oona Bar, Weserstraße 166, 12045 Berlin.

Friday 06 Oct (Wedding): 4 to 6pm @tinkerandborrow shop in Martin Opitz Straße 21, 13357 Berlin; 6-9 pm at Kater und Goldfisch, Exerzierstraße 1, 13357 Berlin.

ABOUT THE ZINE:

Based on an impromptu lecture, this limited edition souvenir gathers fermented remnants of a decade long experience of making art with 'leftovers' or 'cooking with what is there': a practical philosophy or the Nowhere Kitchen experience of cooking and migrating viewed as a human performance. The freshly recycled text is flavored with new insights in the form of endnotes, and textures in the form of juxtaposed images. Altogether, it is a personal story, a fictive documentary, a philosophical loveletter and a possibly inspiring handbooklet for anyone who is either always fascinated with or terrified of cooking. And a perfect booklet to keep in one's kitchen.

Text, Images & Cover Art @pepedayaw

Dear friends and followers,

Hope summer is treating you well. I would like to invite you to support me as I embark on a new chapter in my life with exciting projects. Here is the link to Pepe's Sari-Sari Store, a publishing and donation platform where you can follow and engage with my current and new projects. I am campaigning for a crowdsupported basic income so I could get a headstart and a new lease on life. And you can become my audience and future clients. If 100 of my friends in Instagram and Facebook support me for 5 euros a month, I could have a mini-job basic income! Something I never had since becoming an artist. You can find the link on my bio.

Meanwhile, in the same website, you can also read my latest newsletter, Sari-Sari Stories for more updates. As well as other cute posts.

Thank you for continuing to follow me. Meanwhile, here are some impressions of the 'Picnic Mat', a tapestry that I created to mark the closing of the Sari-Sari Project Space in Berlin, made with different leftover fabrics and old clothes. As well as some sneak pic images to a new video work which I will premiere in Berlin in August, more infos to come soon.

Have a nice week to everyone!

Much love,
Pepe

Hello Berlin! Here I am again. For the past eight months or so and still ongoing, I have been on a self-imposed and much needed ‘break’ and ‘flight mode’. After closing the doors of what has been the amazing Sari-Sari Project in Schillerkiez since the fall of last year, I needed a re-fresh from everything I was doing. And now I am back and would like to properly close this colorful chapter of my life.
On June 3rd, Saturday afternoon, I am hosting a picnic session and thanksgiving fellowship to acknowledge and celebrate the people, the cozy room and neighborhood that became part of the Sari-Sari dream during an amazing five years (2017-2022). If you would like to personally come and take part in this event, please send me a private message and I will send you an invite with the details. Please feel free to invite as well people you know who have taken part in the Sari-Sari project. Hope to see and catch up with you there. And I wish everyone a happy entry into the Summer.
Peace and love,
Pepe

Please feel free to invite as well people you know who have taken part in the Sari-Sari project. Hope to see and catch up with you there. And I wish everyone a happy entry into the Summer.
Peace and love,

It is with humble pride and great pleasure to be working and playing with MeLê Yamomo and Ariel William Orah in a sari-sari mix of stories that boil down to The Sound Within Us, the title of the piece created by MeLê Yamomo showing this weekend at the Ballhaus Naunynstrasse.
Join us as we receive the fall and the full moon telling stories that cross the great lengths of where we are now and where we came from. Hope to see you there! https://ballhausnaunynstrasse.de/play/sonus__the_sound_within_us/photo: Rita Ventura
