artist, jeweller, and diverse other preoccupations, looking out over the great lake in subalpine tasmania....

last 2 days of my show here at Sydenham International in Marrickville, Friday and Saturday 12-5, with a closing performance 6-7pm by my amazing friend @bendenhamstudio channelling local atmospheric forces in response to my work in the gallery, followed by informal discussion for whoever is interested.
the work explores the exchanges of electrical energy between materials specific to the subalpine plateau of central Tasmania, tracking the harmonics and signal artefacts generated as capacitors made of pencil pine or deciduous beech leaves are paired with resistors of tarn water and dolerite rock, to create simple oscillator circuits made of natural materials. singing the landscape, amidst the traffic and chaos of sydney's inner west.
thanks to the amazing @sydenham_international who have hosted this show and given me the support to bring it up from the subalpine highlands of Tasmania.
thanks to all of those who have come to see the work and ask questions and be open to the energetic exchanges taking place in the mundane matter that surrounds, enables and makes us up. so lovely to be back here in sydney where this conversation with this kind of energy is so strong.
and thanks to the subalpine landscape of the central plateau, its grand open cragginess, and all the matter and energy that weaves together to make it.
Sydenham International - 81 Sydenham Road Marrickville - Friday and Saturday 12-5 - closing performance and informal discussion Saturday 5-7pm.....

super happy to be a finalist in the mullins conceptual photographic prize.on until 12th october at muswellbrook art gallery.
i imaged the remains from the ruins of the rainbow chalet on the shores of yingina / the great lake, in subalpine tasmania. corroded copper pipe, rusted nails, pottery shards, and a handful of dirt, were laid directly onto 8x10 film and exposed through high voltage electricity. the electricity of the hydroelectric scheme, that doomed the chalet as the water levels rose, is used here to visualise the decaying remains, as they slowly disintegrate back into ground.

stainless steel kettles i hammered up and welded together for the exhibition “Tasmania Makes” at Design Tasmania in Launceston, alongside an amazing array of other makers, until 3rd march….
@designtasmania
these kettles are made slowly, to last, and to add a deep sense of joy to the act of boiling water, every day, over the years.every hammer swing and file stroke in their making comes together to celebrate the simple things in life….
individually formed from stainless steel sheet, welded and hammered into shape, with handles of charred reclaimed celerytop pine, or wrapped leather, they are made for boiling water on the stovetop, now using induction friendly base materials….
thanks to the awesome team @designtasmania for putting this exhibition together and doing such a great job!
and thanks to the dearly missed robert foster, who inspired and taught me finer points of working stainless steel, after the wonderful robin blau taught me all the rough outlines.to all my wonderful teachers - so many of them over the years - i hope to eventually embody all of your wisdom and generosity....

from recent exhibition - portals - in hobart.
exploring the austere majesty of the central plateau of tasmania, through elemental materials in the landscape, and the movement of electrons deep within their structure. from lichen-covered dolerite rocks, slender leaves of snow gum, cold clear tarn water, and rusting remnants of past habitation, the materials of the plateau are energised, revealing their internal worlds, and allowing a glimpse and a whisper of what it is like to be electric....
....high voltage spark discharge imagery exposed across large format black and white negatives and colour films, displayed in backlit boxes and large prints, tracking the movements of electrical signals as they travel deep within the interior structures of matter....
....audio oscillator circuits made of organic materials - layered pencil pine capacitors, lake water and sediment resistor vials, rusted nail inductors, dolerite and pyrite resistors - components working in pairs to create tuned filter circuits, pulsed by hex inverter chips, creating a deep soundscape of matter and place....
....work to be continued in next exploration - electric tarns - late 2024....

my new show portals is open at salamanca’s sidespace in hobart - 11-6 every day until sunday 15th - come say hi!
this exhibition explores the magickal world of the central plateau, through spark discharge images, x-rays, and photograms of the elemental materials from the landscape. the backlit images and prints are accompanied by sounds created by electrical impulses moving within those elemental materials - lichen covered rocks, vials of clear tarn water, and shavings of pencil pine - vibrating the internal worlds of matter, and allowing us a glimpse and a whisper of what it is like to be electric….

holy deadly brooches - spirit things with golden halo pins.
jewellery can be useful - use it to ask a dead thing how we can make the world better.confer with a meteoric mother about the seeming pointlessness of being a very small critter in the vast openness of space.ask a cthulu caveman about deep time, the simple things, and how to shamble like a woolly mammouth.sit and ponder with an orange-glow-in-the-dark radioactive man upon all the crazy electromagnetic waves we transmit out into space, loaded with dumb youtube content and daytime tv, for any passing aliens to judge us harshly by.ask a neon vampire how to extract the most out of every drop of life.
made from - meterorite ore, woolly mammouth tusk, amber, glow-in-the-dark resin, walnut, corian, buffalo horn, moo bone, and 9ct gold halo.

i have spent a few days blockading down at the tarkine, trying to save this pristine wilderness from a proposed mining tailings dam. i joined the incredible people at the bob brown foundation, undertaking actions where i was cautioned and the next day arrested.
i do this because i want to heal my broken connections with the wild and natural worlds.i want to value life, in all its ways and forms.i want to protect vast pristine wild places like the tarkine before they are lost.and i want to take responsibility for how i live in this beautiful world.
if you feel something similar, come and join the forest defenders to help protect the tarkine, for ourselves, our children, and all the incredible life that dwells in this rich place.

i have spent a few days blockading down at the tarkine, trying to save this pristine wilderness from a proposed mining tailings dam. i joined the incredible people at the bob brown foundation, undertaking actions where i was cautioned and the next day arrested.

roller rings - dense dark tantalum outsides, rolling over ceramic ball bearings, around intricately lathed tracks, lined with simple pretty patterns in copper and silver.i LOVE copper, even if it does leave a slight green stain on the finger.
: )
....and theres a luscious 18ct version for those averse to green stains....
part of the new exhibition 21 november @bilkgallery

core sample rings - tantalum outers lined with a messy fusion of copper, silver, gold, shakudo, shibuichi, bronze, brass, and the odd broken drill bit.its all scrap and offcuts fused together with a tig welder, then bent, cut and folded like a geological landscape.the curlies are offcuts from cutting copper on the lathe, with old silver rings of mine cut up and melted over the top.like baking a cake.or pancakes.fun.its as close to messy as i get, with jewellery at least!
more silver and less copper versions coming someday soon.
part of the exhibition at bilk gallery, canberra, from 21 november....

This comparison of land animal biomass across time, shows how human activity has radically transformed the face of the planet since the domestication of animals after the end of the last ice age. We are so successful at manipulating our environment and feeding ourselves, and so completely self-concerned, that we have isolated ourselves from the larger global environment, and are rapidly backing ourselves into a corner.
Another figure that astounds me is how in 2000 years we have almost halved the plant biomass on land.Halved.
The original research is well worth a read -

Wouldn't it be great if this time of slowing down and reflection during covid, could be used as a point of departure to make our world work better?Such as focussing on various environmental matters - like completely stopping fossil fuel use, and talking openly about population management - alongside basic changes to the structure and purpose of our ridiculously short-term government systems.... We could all have a better life in so many ways - all life - I am just not wise enough to know how, but am keen to learn more and do more.
