An excerpt from my beat-heavy set, live @hatch_sheffield on 9th Feb.

I’m currently preparing a more ambient/drone-based set for my next gig @bishopshousesheffield on 27th April with @sonidopolifonico @pefkin. Supporting @_subphotic_, inspired by the birdsong + immersive rainforest soundscapes of Costa Rica. See you there!

Imagine for a minute.

Why do I have to find a way of being
in a place I didn't ask to be in?

Nothing is for sure or forever, now,
therefore what?

Slow
Slow
Slow
Slow now

Imagine for a minute that you did ask to be here:

Why would I have asked?

Just 6 days before the ElectrOM at Sheffield's Haggler's Corner!

The cafe (room 1) will be host to our chilled and experimental musicians along with a rather delicious looking light show from the @madhatterslightshow

I honestly wish I could be in all 3 rooms at once!

Final tier tickets available (link in my bio, or just go to ra.co and search for ElectrOM).

For an extra fiver, a compilation of music from some of our performers will be available to download after the event.

Credit to Toblerdrone for the lovely audio in this reel.

A few years ago I started a collection which I call ‘words that work’, quotes printed out on thick white card that I keep in a stack on top of my piano.

Whenever I’m feeling at a loose end or in what I call ‘a hollow’, I flick through the deck and see which quote stands out. I leave it on the top of the deck and keep coming back to it until it no longer seems to fit.

Some words are written by me. Some are words from other artists. All of them have helped me at one time or another, so I decided to start sharing them for others to use too.

Bethany was one of the initiators of contemporary mobile sauna culture in the UK, founding WARMTH in 2015.

Bethany is a designer and creative entrepreneur, passionate about creating immersive spatial and sensory experiences, whether through sauna-building, theatre and dance productions, or her electronic music @artists_child

She is inspired by healing cultures and rituals; she has researched sauna culture in Finland, Turkish hammam design, and worked with Mexican artists reinventing Day of the Dead rituals for a UK audience. Her own healing journey has led her to participate in Mexican temazcals, shamanic sweat lodges and Shipibo plant medicine ceremonies.

To unwind, she enjoys long foraging walks, hot yoga and jiu jitsu.

She is the Artistic Director of WARMTH, leading on artistic collaborations, and looking after all things strategic and financial.

She is the person to contact for bespoke events, and corporate or artistic partnerships.

Graphic scores painted with heat onto thermal paper.

I’ve been searching for a visual language to represent how I hear the sound textures I make with my synths - and have been experimenting making drawings with heat.

These sketches are made with: lighters, incense, steam from the kettle and a gas fire. There’s something so thrilling about the precise gesture and attention required to capture the marks without destroying the paper (or setting my studio on fire..).

I’m developing my graphic score visual language as part of my #ChangingGear commission with @yorkshire_sound_women_network

It’s wonderful to be able to block out some studio days and explore a new side to my work.

I’m incredibly grateful for YSWN pairing me up with @loubarnell as a mentor on this commission - Lou is a fantastic local sound artist and facilitator who I know from @keyof_she

The sketchbook page is from our first meeting in @thedepotbakery in Hillsborough chatting about performance styles and priorities over a coffee.

Finally getting round to soldering my @musicthingmodular #turingmachine - reading along with the manual and listening along to @mylar.melodies YouTube live stream, which is helping me feel like I’m at some kind of friendly DIY synth-making workshop.

Love the detail on the Turing Machine PCB about inspiration. I’ve been thinking a lot about lineages recently - creative lineages, artistic chosen families, inspiration family trees. Sometimes I feel like I’m in conversation with @laurieandersonofficial as I think, or @sevwave as I listen, or @tovejanssonofficial as I write. It’s a fascinating kind of one-way intimacy. People who are very dear to me and to my creative process even though we don’t know each other. It’s wonderful really.

It’s something I’ve often talked about with @politerebellion_ - most recently when I was collaborating/consulting with Ellie on Loose Ends (the digital version of Loose Ends is very thought provoking if you’re interested in thinking about the different maps we might make of our chosen family as well as our given families). It’s a beautiful thing to acknowledge who is significant to your practice, however distant or tangential it might seem.

I need an internal reset today. I’ve been taking too much on, spreading myself too thinly. I’ve forgotten the ritual of setting aside sacred rest days in my calendar, I’ve neglected my dedicated art time. My body is shouting at me - complaining with muscle knots + breakouts + rashes. I need to find a way to look after myself in the turbulence.

I don’t have my space/home/studio at the moment (I’m still in the middle of refurbishment), and it’s an ungrounding feeling. My base is usually my quiet haven, my place to recharge, reset, collect myself, turn off from the demands of the world and tune into what my soul and my body need.

I need to find a way of existing from a place of ‘home’ even when I don’t feel I have the ideal conditions around me. I just did my hapé ritual for the first time in ages, and it felt like a homecoming. The message I received was one of ease, of remembrance: spirit is not going anywhere, it’s always there, and available for free whenever we are able to tune into it.

How can I hold this sense of space within my body, within my breath, so I’m not waiting for the ‘right’ external conditions to be able to access it?

How can I make my spiritual practices so close to home that my own body, and daily practice of being alive becomes the home that to come back to, even when the external spaces and rhythms aren’t in place to help?

Posting this as a slide here to keep an archive of gigs and experiences I’ve had out in the world with Artists’ Child.

Back in September I played at Readymade Books in Gelsenkirchen as part of Kommse Ücken festival.

When I bought my first synthesiser* in Summer 2021, I never expected that 3 summers later I’d be bundling my instruments into my bag and heading to Germany for a gig.

My journey into synths began with a book. I’d written a long poem/text, Artists’ Child, about my experience healing from spiritual trauma. Suddenly, when reading it back to myself, I heard a beat from beneath the words. The words were asking to become music. I knew I had to find the tools to express something hidden behind this text…

I also knew they needed to be new tools - new emotions needed new tools to express themselves. I knew I was ‘musical’ - I'd done composition at GCSE, but I’d never taken music seriously beyond then.

I was listening to a favourite track Anthrocene by @nickcaveofficial, and noticed a kind of detailed snare rhythm in the background. It sparked a question: so I’m definitely not a drummer, but what tools would I need to be able to make my own evolving rhythmic textures like this**? I somehow stumbled into ‘modular synth YouTube’, spending hours learning about synthesis from videos by @mylar.melodies @sarahbellereid + co and never looked back.

Receiving a DYCP @aceagrams grant I was able to take some time to start making music... suddenly I had glitches + drones, wild textures + granular noise, deep kicks + detailed delays at my fingertips.

I know I’ve only scratched the surface. As I put together material for this gig at @readymade.books @kommse_uecken, I enjoyed collecting samples and sequences from the last 16 months of experimentation, and I’m excited about where the next 16 months will take me.

But for now, this little gig in a bookshop marks a huge moment for me. Thank you to everyone who has inspired me (knowingly or unknowingly) and supported me so far.

*@makenoisemusic 0-coast

**it turns out the sound on the track was actually a guy playing a snare drum after all! But hey, it sparked a whole new artistic pursuit in me - so that doesn’t matter.
