Astra Shell is a collaborative and interactive body of work by Simon Ballester and Kieron Coffey founders of Metamorphika Studio.

The series of installation explore disassembly and reconfiguration of closed systems. The duo of artists methodically dismantled discarded self standing pianos, catalogued each piece and reassembled them into new configurations.
Each fragment are in negotiation, standing by gravity and friction without any glue or external joinery highlighting the fragility and ephemerality of such systems. The sculptures are subsequently reorganised as spatial propositions forming abstract landscapes.

The Iron heart - the resonant engine of the instrument - extracted from the original piano, is reconstituted as a performative sound object and activated at the opening of Inside Out exhibition by kit Gordon and Noise Warfare. Sound operates here as a form of structural memory, a vibration that persists beyond the instrument’s original form.

Through extraction, disassembly and reconfiguration the instrument becomes a multilayered architectural body - one that can be opened, read and revoiced.

Astra Shell is a collaborative and interactive body of work by Simon Ballester and Kieron Coffey founders of Metamorphika Studio.

The series of installation explore disassembly and reconfiguration of closed systems. The duo of artists methodically dismantled discarded self standing pianos, catalogued each piece and reassembled them into new configurations.
Each fragment are in negotiation, standing by gravity and friction without any glue or external joinery highlighting the fragility and ephemerality of such systems. The sculptures are subsequently reorganised as spatial propositions forming abstract landscapes.

The Iron heart - the resonant engine of the instrument - extracted from the original piano, is reconstituted as a performative sound object and activated at the opening of Inside Out exhibition by kit Gordon and Noise Warfare. Sound operates here as a form of structural memory, a vibration that persists beyond the instrument’s original form.

Through extraction, disassembly and reconfiguration the instrument becomes a multilayered architectural body - one that can be opened, read and revoiced.
