The winning submission for our Sound of the City in collaboration with @citiesandmemory was a sound created by @max_greening of the sounds of vendors in the park, recorded in Zhengzhou, China. A short clip can be heard here.

Max: “In this recording, you can hear several street vendors gathered at a city park. Rather than calling out to customers, they use pre-recorded voice samples, looping indefinitely. Many of these loops are no more than one word long. The automated voices interweave as I walk back and forth with a handheld recorder.

When a friend in Canada first heard this, they assumed I had processed the audio into a Steve Reich style composition. That is not the case. This recording is unaltered with exception to a light ‘mastering’, and a few edits to remove interruptions.”
