“Alone Between Two Cities” is live!

A short film from a solo ride across South Korea, almost 600km from Seoul to Busan in one continuous push.

There’s something about crossing a place under your own power that changes the way you remember it. The distance stops being a number, and becomes a collection of small moments, rivers at first light, quiet towns, fluorescent convenience stores, the hum of tyres in the dark, and the strange calm that arrives from repetitiveness.

What started as an FKT-style attempt became a ride about solitude, movement, and the way a country reveals itself when you expose yourself enough to notice.

I rode almost 600km across South Korea in one continuous push, solo and self-supported from Seoul to Busan.

No support crew, no follow car and no one waiting at the finish.

What started as an FKT-style attempt slowly became something much more personal. I think that’s why I keep coming back to these kinds of projects. When you do something alone, there’s nowhere to hide. Every decision is yours, every mistake is yours, every moment of doubt is yours to figure out. There’s something awfully honestwithin that.

The rest day ritual 🧽 🫧

The @Corosglobal Dura was my co-pilot whilst I rode the length of South Korea. 🏎️ 🤝

With a route that zig zagged through cities, farmland, canals and tiny lanes, and with thousands of turns along the way. I loaded the GPX file, synced it wirelessly, and from that point the Dura handled the navigation. Giving turn-by-turn notifications and showing exactly where I was on the route.

On a ride like this the goal is simple, keep the average speed up. Having the map and navigation dialled meant I wasn’t slowing down to double check directions or getting lost.

But the biggest benefit was mental. Long efforts are all about keeping the peace and reducing unnecessary brain power. Knowing the route was under control meant I could just focus on the job, keep pedalling and keep moving forward.

A day in the life bikepacking across South Korea 🇰🇷

Wake up, snacks for breakfast, follow the river south, hide from the rain, hit the buffet quota for the day, spend an eternity working out how the hotel toilet functions, bed time. And then do it all again the next day 🔁

The chaos of a convenience store stop mid-ride.

Burst through the door, run down the aisles grabbing anything that remotely looks like carbs, in the moment it feels like the most important mission in the world.

Shopkeepers and customers watching in complete confusion as you sprint around the store, dripping sweat and piling snacks on the counter.

Then time slows as the cashier scans each item one… by… one… while all you want to do is get back on the bike 😅

The longer the ride, the more important it is to minimise variables and when you head into the dark, confidence in your light setup is the foundation for that.

During the Seoul to Busan ride I’d worked out that I’d likely be riding through about 4 hours of darkness, so choosing the right setup was all about balancing output and battery life.

I ran the @exposure.lights Diablo 15 on the bars, set to Mode 2, giving just under 400 lumens for around 6 hours. That gave me plenty of light for the expected dark hours, with a solid safety buffer if things started slipping behind schedule.

Out back, the Boost-R was putting out 75 lumens for 6 hours, lining up nicely with the front light and keeping the whole setup simple and predictable.

When you’re setting off solo, with nothing to fall back on, it’s all about trust and confidence in your equipment. Knowing your lights will last exactly as long as you need them to makes heading into the dark a lot easier.

It would be easy to label this project as an FKT chase, but that was only part of the story.

The deeper reason for the ride was to put myself to the test across a much wider spectrum. This year I’ve been trying to step outside my comfort zone, exploring different corners of cycling and pushing myself into unfamiliar territory. This was my first FKT attempt, my first major project on anything other than a mountain bike, and a chance to experience a completely different cycling culture.

From start to finish this was a completely solo effort. No support crew, no roadside encouragement, and no one waiting at the finish. If something went wrong, there was no rescue coming, it was all on me. The thought of being alone in a foreign country, knowingly about to push myself to my absolute limit in an environment full of unknowns and variables, was a daunting one.

The best way I’ve been able to describe the ride is “consistently uncomfortable.” Nothing catastrophic happened, but it was one of those days where little things just kept stacking up, rain, headwinds, road spray, crashes, constant discomfort. Most of the ride became about keeping things moving forward and breaking down the effort into small digestible chunks.

Eventually, after nearly 20 hours of pedalling, I rolled into Busan.

What I didn’t expect was how strange the finish would feel. It was the middle of the night, the city was quiet, and there was no one around. After months of planning and effort, after emptying everything out on the bike, the moment finally arrived, and it ended in complete silence.

For months all of your focus builds toward this moment, and despite all the planning that goes into a project like this, it’s the one thing you can’t prepare for. The ride ends, the goal disappears, and suddenly you’re left with the quiet question of what’s next?
