Another one of my all-time favorite drawings. I remember it clearly, I made it after I got really frustrated during the 3-materials challenge last year. So I grabbed some colored pencils, and somehow this just came out, straight from my hands onto the paper. That kind of flow doesn’t happen often, but when it does, it feels really good.

I felt it was time to reintroduce myself, so here goes:
Hello! I’m Malu. I create art through painting, drawing, and illustration. I’m excited to share my journey with you!
10 things about me:
1️⃣ I live in the Netherlands with my wonderful daughter (almost 7) ❤️, my husband, and two cats 🐱🐱 (Pom and Poes).
2️⃣ I hate dirty hands, but all my hobbies involve getting them dirty. 🎨 I love painting with my hands, I bake bread 🍞, and I occasionally make pottery. So, yeah.
3️⃣ Until recently, I worked as a clinical educational/clinical psychologist (Orthopedagoog Generalist in Dutch). But I had to make a complete shift, I became disabled myself and couldn’t continue my job. Now I’m trying to rediscover myself and life, as best as I can. 🌿
4️⃣ Two years ago, I had major brain surgery due to a brain tumor. Drawing and painting helped me process everything. 🖌️🖼️
5️⃣ The surgery left me with Acquired Brain Injury. My tongue and vocal cords became paralyzed, along with other visible and invisible disabilities. 🌻
6️⃣ I can’t swallow properly, speak clearly, sneeze, cough, yawn, or gag, I’ve lost all of that. It’s strange, to say the least. 😶
7️⃣ I love cooking and baking, even though I can’t eat. 👩🍳 I use a feeding tube for nutrition.
8️⃣ A big part of my life takes place online. 🌍 For many disabled people, the online world is more accessible and easier to navigate. Along the way, I’ve met many kind, disabled, chronically ill, and wonderful artists. 💫
9️⃣ In 2024, with six other artists, I co-founded @drawdailytogether 🎨, which accidentally grew into a warm and inspiring art community. I host the account, and the others join in with beautiful references. Come have a look if you need some motivation and daily painting inspiration!
🔟 And last but not least, starting this September, I’ll begin studying Visual Storytelling & Illustration at @vensteracademy . Talk about a 180! 🎉 I’m incredibly proud and grateful.
Thanks for reading all the way through!

Yesterday I was in Utrecht. I actually went there to practice drawing people at a game afternoon/evening, but I ended up sitting outside, on the doorstep, and thought: let me first do a quick sketch of the houses. Two hours later I was still trying to finish the drawing just in time to catch a photo in the sun before it disappeared behind the buildings.
After that, I did try drawing some people, but I think I had already used up all my inspiration and energy in those first few hours.
This drawing makes me happy though. At first I felt overwhelmed and just tried putting down some lines, but I knew that’s not really the way I enjoy drawing most. So I decided to start with some gouache instead. That broke through the block, and luckily, for once, I had actually brought it with me.

Hi everyone!
Week 3 already, with this week’s prompt: Illuminate (#VVSC26ILLUMINATE)
I really wanted to make it easy on myself this week and make something simple. Basically just following my own tips: don’t make it too hard on yourself, just start, go with your first plan, use what you have on hand. And even if it’s not pretty/neat/whatever just post it. So here we are. This also means: haven’t dared to join yet, think you’re not good enough, made something you find just Meh? Doesn’t matter! Just post it, it doesn’t have to be pretty, finished, impressive, difficult, it can just be anything. I just wanted to make a simple little story, and end result: job well done!
So I present to you my micro story / drawing for week 3. I used just a Pitt Oil Base Extra Soft pencil from Faber & Castell, because that’s what was lying around here.
The whole month of May it’s the #VensterVisualStoryChallenge2026.
Every week a different prompt to create your own little micro-story. Be wild, be unhinged, be little, do you and have fun!
How to join:
• Follow all hosts
• Use #VensterVisualStoryChallenge2026
• Use the weekly hashtags
• Tag all hosts in your caption AND image
Thank you @majken_enequist_art for leading us this year and putting in allll the work!

War. In the world, in our heads, in our hearts. It can happen to anyone. It happens to many people. It could have been me, it could be you, it could be any of us. And life goes on, war or no war. It continues and there is no stopping it. My thoughts go out to everyone experiencing this right now, to everyone who is afraid, who has lost family and friends, pieces of themselves. To children growing up without enough food and water, and who will carry the consequences for generations. To everything that just keeps going and doesn’t stop. Please let it stop.
So we keep going too, and it’s already the second week of the #venstervisualstorychallenge, with the second prompt: Collision
#VVSC26COLLISION
And foremost, thank you all for everything that’s been made and shared. It’s SO fun and SO cool to see what’s in people’s heads and what comes out. Small, large, and everything in between. I’m sure I haven’t seen or shared everything, and I’m actually hesitant to look at the hashtag because then I’ll see how much I’ve missed.
On behalf of us all, keep up this spirit!

It’s all men until it’s no man. Right? Right. Happy Monday morning!
Sorry to bring this to you, but the last couple of weeks, or months, I’m so fed up with men treating women like s***. The whole ‘r*pe academy’ story, the state of the world led by men. The things they say and do, the way they take up space everywhere, old white males, I can’t handle it anymore.
Anyway, on a better note, it’s the first week of the #VensterVisualStoryChallenge2026 and the first prompt is ‘curiosity’: #VVSC26curiosity.
As always, I only get some work done when the deadline is nearly there. Really, I hate myself for that, and I tried, I tried really really hard to change this, but whatever I do, it always comes down to this. Somehow I must feel a loooot of stress before it’s time for me to get into action.
So curiosity, my brain went like: curiosity, space, the sun dies in three trillion years or something, and then what? Why are we here, space again, curiosity, that thing on Mars, what’s its name again, the moon. Astronauts, gosh I hate men, they want to have everything, you know what’s funny, all men on the moon. Byeeee. Well, and here we are.
To be clear, I know there was a woman amongst the astronauts going to the moon a couple weeks ago, she’s awesome (Christina Koch), they were awesome together. I saw a picture of NASA headquarters or something like that and there were a looot of women working there, it looked awesome too. And by the way, they run a very cool account on Threads.
So it’s by no means a dig at NASA or something, it’s more like the state of mind I’m in, the world is in, and I really don’t like that. Sometimes I wish all men just moved house to the moon. We will be fine.
So I present to you my micro story for this week. I used Indian ink and some colored pencils to create this series of drawings.

We are almost ready to roll with the Venster Visual Story Challenge 2026!
In this post we want to remind you of a few important details regarding the posting to make sure that we will get to see your lovely stories as they will be posted.
Please read it carefully and maybe bookmark it in case you’ll need a reminder later on.
When posting your stories in May, it is very important to TAG US (all 7 hosts) in the post. It is not just the @mention in the caption, but also using the “tag people” (just under the caption) and tag all the hosts in your images. Without this it could be difficult for us to find your posts, so please help us and TAG!
Oh, and you don’t have to invite us as collaborator! We’re so sorry for all the rules, hopefully it will all work out, and if not, don’t hesitate to send me a message, that’s no problem at all!
Last but not least, use these hashtags in your caption:
General challenge hashtag: #VensterVisualStoryChallenge2026
Weekly (prompt) hashtags:
Week 1 - #vvsc26curiosity
Week 2 - #vvsc26collision
Week 3 - #vvsc26illuminate
Week 4 - #vvsc26narrow
We will do our best to look at all your stories and share some highlights during the week, but last year we realised it’s hard to respond to ALL of your creations. You are very very welcome to follow the hashtags and look at the stories others are making and comment something positive. We are looking to build an uplifting community here, and you’re an important part of this.
Make sure to follow all the hosts to get see the stuff they will be sharing!

And most important: HAVE FUN!

This week I want to bring you along in how you could make a microstory. Not a perfect one, not like a polished mini narrative, but the low-threshold side of microstories. How you can join in without feeling like you have to make something amazing. Because that’s exactly the kind of thinking that freezes me completely. I’m sharing 7 tips I hope to use myself.
1. Don’t wait for inspiration, just start. Maybe it’s better to not overthink it. Look at the prompt for the week, open your sketchbook and make something in the next 30 minutes. Draw whatever comes to mind.
2. Work with what you have on hand that day. Don’t go hunting for materials or references. Whatever you grabbed yesterday or whatever’s near you, use that. It makes the process faster and more immediate.
3. The word is a trigger, not a rule. You’re not illustrating the dictionary definition. The word just unlocks something in your brain. Your interpretation can be weird, sideways, personal. That’s the whole point.
4. One quick sketch is enough. You don’t need a finished piece. A rough sketch, some loose marks, that’s totally valid. The speed keeps it fresh and prevents it from becoming precious.
5. Commit to your first idea. The moment you think “oh, I could draw this,” just start. Don’t sit there weighing five different directions. Your instinct is faster and more honest than your planning brain.
6. Post it even if it feels rough. Done and posted stories beat perfect and unpublished ones. People connect a lot to the honesty of speed anyway.
There are plenty of people making beautiful microstories, and they’re wonderful to look at. But I’m sure there are just as many people who get inspired by unpolished stories too!
I have to confess: these tips are really for myself, but I hope you get something out of them too!
Ready for the Venster Visual Story Challenge?
This May:
4 weeks = 4 prompts = 4 micro stories

What are micro-stories? Can they tell of a BIG event? How many images? Is text allowed?
In this post we will try to answer frequently asked questions about the Vester Visual Micro Story Challenge.
Q: What are visual micro-stories?
A: They are stories told visually, using a short sequence of images.
Q: How short is a “short sequence of images”?
A: Yeah. Probably more than one image and less than 6-ish. But if you can tell a story with one image we’ll probably applaud you, and if you need a bit more than six no one will call the police. Ask yourself: does it feel short?
Q: Am I allowed to use text?
A: Yes. If you do, just make sure that the images talk at least as loud as the text.
Q: Can micro-stories tell a BIG tale?
A: Of course! What makes them micro is the amount of images, not how tall the tale is.
Q: Can my 4 micro-stories create one bigger story?
A: Yes! This is totally up to you. You can make standalone micro-stories that has nothing to do with each other, or you can let them connect to one larger story.
Q: can I use an existing story?
A: This challenge is all about developing storytelling skills, so we encourage you to make your own stories. But it is also about having fun, so we won’t say you can’t. If you do, make it your own - add a twist, flip things around, do it in your own style!
And remember: micro-stories can be pretty much anything! Silly, sketchy, deep, serious, pointless, boring, emotional, whatever.
Most important - HAVE FUN!!
If you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to ask us!

Hooray! Announcing the return of the Venster Visual Story Challenge this May on Instagram! This year I’m one of the hosts alongside a bunch of really fun and inspiring illustrators. I do have to admit something: I am SO not good at making micro-stories. So, don’t set the bar too high, experiment, try things out, and let’s make something of it together! Are you joining, yes, yes?
Join us, a group of Venster Academy alumni and students, in creating visual micro-narratives.
🍀When? All of May – 4 weeks
How it works: For each week in May, one prompt to create 1 visual micro-story (just a few images). By the end, you’ll have 4 micro-stories that can each stand alone OR connect into a bigger tale. Use any style or medium, as long as it’s human-made!
🍀How to join: Follow the organizer: @majken_enequist_artand co-hosts: @ehud.neuhaus @niek_schuil_illustrations @jessamijn @annetoppenillo @geeske_illustrations and me @maluhendrikszen. Also follow our alma mater: @vensteracademy
🍀Prompts drop April 6 so you can prep ahead. Post weekly in May with hashtags: #VensterVisualStoryChallenge2026 & the hashtag for the prompts.
🍀Tag all hosts and @vensteracademy in image & caption so we can see and share your work!
🍀Micro-stories are short but can be rich, serious or playful, fast or detailed. Have fun, spread the word, and share your stories!
🍀More info is coming soon!

Another 2 drawings from observation I did last week while on Terschelling. I forgot to mention, one kid walked into a glass door twice, the dog hit his head running into a pole, we had some flu victims who missed the entire holiday, and I also walked into the glass door, the cut above my eye had to be glued shut, and my eye turned black and blue after. It was something.
I made these 2 drawings at the beginning and end of the holiday, trying to be mindful about negative space (didn’t work obviously as there is NO negative space at alll) and being intimidated by the enormous lamp above the dining table.
