New book! Emerging Ecologies published by @themuseumofmodernart

Published to accompany the first expansive survey of the history of environmental thinking in architecture, Emerging Ecologies: Architecture and the Rise of Environmentalism studies the role architects have played in defining our understanding of “nature” and the “environment,” specifically during the emergence of the environmental movement. This richly illustrated publication presents more than forty-five architectural contributions—from Eleanor Raymond and Mária Telkes’s groundbreaking work on solar houses to Buckminster Fuller’s world resource management system and the environmental symbolism of Emilio Ambasz—to explore the role designers played in both promoting the ecological cause and in outlining the very terms of their nascent field.

Edited by @chan.carson and @everyoneobservesmatt

With projects by: Emilio Ambasz, Ant Farm, Phyllis Birkby, Serge Chermayeff, Cosanti Foundation, @eamesoffice and Kevin Roche, Environmental Communications, R. Buckminster Fuller, Anna Halprin and Lawrence Halprin, John C. Lilly with Margaret Howe Lovatt, Murphy & Mackey, @nasa , Gerard K. O’Neill, Richard Neutra, New Alchemy Institute, Glen Small, Oswald Mathias Ungers, Warren County Citizens Concerned about PCB, Malcolm Wells, James Wines, Frank Lloyd Wright

Hot off the press! Doppelgänger by Esper Postma

The city is full of symbols; buildings and monuments that confidently remind us who we are, what our history is and whom we should honour. But these objects are not as stable as they seem. Esper Postma breathes life into the dormant side of their identity, the qualities they would rather keep from view. His works show that every building, monument and artefact has a doppelgänger; an inner alter ego that is vying for attention.

The book consists of two volumes bound together, identical in structure and design. The first volume documents Postma’s exhibitions, while the second presents research images. When read side by side, each spread becomes a doppelgänger in its own right.

With essays by Philipp Oswalt, Jasmijn Visser (@combustingspontaneously), Esper Postma

Printing & binding: @orogpm
Lithography: @alex.feenstra

New publication Re-thinking Re-use @hoh_architecten

Re-Thinking Re-Use is a dialogue and collaboration between Dutch and Japanese (building) cultures, where differing perspectives enrich and inspire one another. By learning from each other’s traditions and views on old, new and change, the project seeks a new and guiding balance. It embraces the reuse and transformation of existing buildings, structures and materials, encouraging an exchange between generations of architects and builders, and between innovation and craftsmanship. At a time when the construction sector faces the ecological impact of its actions, Re-Thinking Re-Use offers a sustainable perspective, rooted in continuity and evolution within the built environment.

New publication, envisioning Spatial Justice @carolinewton

Envisioning Spatial Justice is both a reflection and a proposition. It synthesises insights accumulated through research and teaching and from years of collaborating with students whose graduation projects placed justice at the core of their spatial investigations. Structured around theory, reflection, and design, the book explores what it means to design with justice in mind. Challenging neoliberal paradigms and drawing on feminist, post-colonial, and radical urban theory, it insists on the political power of imagination. It calls for developing new ethical foundations for spatial practice. Part provocation, part toolkit, part manifesto, Envisioning Spatial Justice speaks to urbanists, designers, educators, and activists committed to co-creating more just and inclusive futures.
