The mural is 18 ft wide and 25 ft tall, a giant piece painted using approximately 5 liters of acrylic paint. We had only one day to complete everything, with five and a half hours of intense brush work and a full day of preparation on site. It was an exciting challenge and totally worth it. I just published Gapski to my portfolio, a typeface developed as part of the @typewest program. I’ve been designing typefaces since 2012, but mostly through a background in calligraphy and lettering. Type West has been the chance to go deeper, with more structure and rigor.

Gapski is a revival based on metal type from @tipografiagapski , in Curitiba, Brazil, my hometown. The original type was produced by Funtimod, one of the largest active foundries in Brazil between 1920 and 1970.
This is my first text typeface project, and one of the most rewarding design challenges I’ve taken on. Unlike calligraphy or lettering, type design demands a different kind of commitment, weeks and months of refinement at a level of detail that’s hard to find in any other medium.

As I tell my students: lettering only needs to work for the specific letters in a given piece. Type is different. You’re building a complete system that has to function across every possible combination of letters, punctuation, and spacing.

The family is still evolving, currently expanding from Hairline to Black.

This is my first text typeface project, and one of the most rewarding design challenges I’ve taken on. Unlike calligraphy or lettering, type design demands a different kind of commitment, weeks and months of refinement at a level of detail that’s hard to find in any other medium.

As I tell my students: lettering only needs to work for the specific letters in a given piece. Type is different. You’re building a complete system that has to function across every possible combination of letters, punctuation, and spacing.

The family is still evolving, currently expanding from Hairline to Black.

I just published Gapski to my portfolio, a typeface developed as part of the @typewest program. I’ve been designing typefaces since 2012, but mostly through a background in calligraphy and lettering. Type West has been the chance to go deeper, with more structure and rigor.

Gapski is a revival based on metal type from @tipografiagapski , in Curitiba, Brazil, my hometown. The original type was produced by Funtimod, one of the largest active foundries in Brazil between 1920 and 1970.

Playing with #typecooker at @typewest 🤓
Among the many things we do at Type West during the course (and soon you’ll start seeing more type design work from me around here because of that), one of the exercises that really helps develop our letter drawing skills is #TypeCooker.

TypeCooker is a website that generates a typographic “recipe” with different criteria for you to create a word from scratch. For this exercise, besides being a slab serif, one of the requirements was usage in signage.

So I decided to have some fun with it and created this simulated neon application. I’m also sharing a bit of the process, which started on the iPad, moved into @glyphsapp , and finished in Photoshop and Adobe Premiere.

I always enjoy this exercise because it pushes you to make decisions you might not make on your own.
