TOMORROW!! Our Day of the Ancestors: Festival of Masks event is almost here πβ€οΈ
Thanks again to @forbes for speaking with LA Commons founder Karen Mack and recognizing our beloved annual Leimert Park tradition.
Karen beautifully expresses in the interview: "The African worldview tends to not see separation between the dead and the living, and so (the Festival) is to facilitate that connection."
And, not only will @lolasmallwoodcuevas be attending the Festival of Masks and delivering her remarks on the establishment of the Historic South LA Black Cultural District, but we also are thrilled to welcome @currendpricejr and @sadeelhawary. We look forward to hearing from these local leaders on the cultural preservation efforts of South LA stories.

π¨β¨ LA Commons was so grateful to be part of this yearβs Arts & Culture Summit hosted by @caforthearts!
Our Executive Director, Karen Mack, and our Community Arts Program Associate Director, Valery Mendoza-Martinez, shared more about our Healthy Culture Hub model with folks from all over California! They were interested in learning about our Healthy Culture Hub model and applying it to their own communities. LA Commonsβ Healthy Culture Hubs are built with community, by centering youth and resident artists to create accessible arts, culture and community programming that focuses on health and resiliency.βοΈ
Thank you to CA for the Arts for hosting such an inspiring event for over 600 arts administrators, art workers and artists! β₯οΈ

π Festival of Masks Weekly Workshops start tomorrow!
We want to invite all artists, budding artists, youth and community members to participate in these free community workshops EVERY SATURDAY in May and June! π¨β¨
π Stop by to create your very own mask to bring to Festival of Masks! You can create, build, tinker with and refine beautiful masks over the course of these next 8 weeks with paper mache, or, if all you have is one or two free Saturdays, we have materials for you to create more simplified versions too! We canβt wait to see what you create when you bring it to Festival of Masks on June 28th! Mask-making workshops are led by Maria Elena Cruz (@artist_mariaecruz) and Ronieka Pinkney.
π If you have always been interested in African dance, this is your chance to participate in a free master class series taught by Daunte (@iamkingtae)! By June, youβll be able to do a full African dance routine. Bring these moves to Festival of Masks as well!
π₯ Also! Keep coming back every week to learn African drum rhythms from the one and only Mama Nene (@drumrene)! By Festival of Masks, youβll be able to play a full African song on the drums!
Which one (or all three?!) will you join? Let us know in the comments β¦

The culture is right here. πππ¨
Showtime Laker Norm Nixon is in the heart of Leimert Park and speaking to the LA County Delegation why South LA deserves to be at the center of every conversation about our cityβs future.
This is the neighborhood where the Debbie Allen Dance Academy has been training the next generation since 2001 and sending them straight to Broadway.
Where MacArthur Genius Mark Bradford came back home, planted his roots and co-founded Art + Practice so Leimert Park would never have to leave the neighborhood to experience world class art.
The delegation also visited the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center where live jazz and community fill every corner and Art + Practice where culture meets access.
The 2028 Olympics are coming to LA. We are making sure cultural districts like this one benefits and is supported.
South LA is not a backdrop. It is the foundation.

Thank you to lead artist Halline Overby (@hay.low) and co-artist Momodu (@im.momodu) for teaching a wonderful photography series! We canβt wait to see everyoneβs final work on display! π¨π
