Chris and I were dance partners in college at @smumeadowsdance 20 years ago (how is that number true?!) and also he’s still one of my favorite people to dance with in the whole world. Come dance the night away with us.

My newest work - “Different Kind of Girl” - premieres at the Ailey Citigroup Theater in NYC from June 13-15 as a part of @womaninmotion_danceco 5th season. 3 shows. 7 pm.

The piece features all 10 company members - @rachelthalman @yuzzz12 @mallorypettee @taylorhabershaw @mkhartung @itsmaemara @dana.tag @colbymarie93 @emilycardea @austin.braxtonsmith. It is a medley of @maggierogers tunes. It is sad and happy. And mostly all the stuff in between. There is a video element directed by me and shot and edited by @jacob.hiss that’s part of it too.

P.S. @gcope.nyc took these gorgeous photos from the women MOVING in their donor rehearsal in May. She is also premiering a mini-doc about the making of the piece and I’m nervous about what I said in the interview 😉 that will make the final cut but excited to see the process on the big screen.

My mom sent me this song on 5/13/24, I made it up on 5/14/24 and taught it the first time on 5/15/24. It has had lives in a piece and many classes now, with this most recent iteration on 5/11/26 at @stepsonbroadway captured by @jacob.hiss. The words keep repeating in my head and moving to them makes them more realized. From the high-energy stages of Radio City as a former Rockette to the unimaginable challenge of a terminal diagnosis, Katie’s story is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. We explore how she turned a life-altering health crisis into a creative movement, producing self-authored shows like 35: A Celebration of Being Alive that serve as both artistic expression and vital fundraising for head and neck cancer awareness. Join us as we discuss the healing alchemy of dance & movement, the need for space to reconcile with a cancer diagnosis, and returning to a “normal” life post treatment.

Katie Drablos is an NYC-based dancer, choreographer, and educator, formerly a Radio City Rockette. A stage four tongue cancer survivor, Katie champions resilience through her self-produced shows like 35: A Celebration of Being Alive and Only the Best, which raised money for @spohncusa (Support for People with Oral and Head & Neck Cancer). Katie continues to dance and choreograph in New York City.

We’ve Got the Music in Us

A really cool job opportunity surprised me in January and “Professor Katie” was born. 🤘 I taught the Juniors and Seniors at @msm.nyc this past semester. Musical Theatre Dance - 3 days a week (MWF), 9 am and 10:30 am sections. I loved it. Especially the people. The integration of feeling into moving was always so present with these true triple threats. Wednesday, 5/13, was my last day and this was the final video take in the very last class (also many of the seniors final class ever at MSM). Thank you @samlobelvideography for capturing these moments for me. It was a wonderful and unexpected semester with hungry, driven and badass artists.

@kathleen_laituri introduced me to this song in early 2021. I had just been diagnosed with cancer and was sleeping on my sister and brother-in-law’s couch in Hoboken in the time determining the surgery and treatment plan. I live alone in NYC usually, but needed support. I made this combo up in their bedroom while they both worked remotely in the living area. Covid fear was still very high. I was teaching at Steps in the space at 2121 Broadway at this time, but all students were still virtual. I knew I had cancer when I taught this but hadn’t shared the news broadly yet. Revisited it - 5 years later - with students in the room with me. Too many people are hurting right now, this always seems to be true, yet we look up when we can and how we can, if we can. Dance continues to be the clearest way for me to see in the dark. - Katie
