And so it begins!! We’ve kicked off the community workshops that are central to an up and coming exhibition at @cardiniaculturalcentre!! Catchment to Coast is an exhibition I’m helping to create for the wonderful @cardiniashirecouncil in collaboration with the exceptionally talented multi-media artist @miss_stingray and members of the fabulous Cardinia Community!! The exhibition is about the water that runs through the Cardinia Catchment - which is huge! It begins up in the hills, round Belgrave and Emerald, and goes all the way to Western Port/Warn Marin. We are focussing on 12 hero animal species that all have different water requirements - permanent, ephemeral, fresh, brackish, reedy, swampy, full of mudflats - you get the picture! It’s been fascinating learning about the local animals & plants & their different water needs and how these have been affected by the built environment, and how the Council is working with numerous stakeholders to try and create new habitat. It will be a really exciting exhibition! I hope you will come!

And thanks so much @bronwyn.ward.artist and all the amazingly friendly and knowledgable team at @cardiniashirecouncil and also to the legends at @displaymakers in Cheltenham who have been making laser cuts for my projects for years.

I got this email from the PCA today with the above appeal for support. I was so relieved that members voted for the continuation of the PCA, but I’m also anxious to see what comes next. I do hope we can keep this wonderful organisation, which has been the beating heart of the Australian print community for 60 years, can find a way forward.

There is also an AGM coming up where we’ll find out more about future plans & who has stepped up to make future plans… Details from the email read:

‘The Extraordinary General Meeting of the Print Council was held online on Wednesday 22 April 2026 at 7:00pm AEST, with 123 members in attendance and 82 proxy forms received on behalf of members not attending.

At this meeting, the Special Resolution,

That the members of the Print Council of Australia Inc. resolve to wind up the association in accordance with the Associations Incorporation Reform Act 2012 and the rules of the association,

Was voted down, with 75 votes in favour and 113 votes against (including proxy votes). Following this vote, the 2025-26 Committee of the Print Council has stepped down and all Committee positions are now vacant.

Therefore,

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Annual General Meeting of the members of the Print Council of Australia Inc. for 2026 will be held,

On:Saturday 30 May 2026

At:2:00pm AEST

Online:Registration at https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/IKWluTg7RJOIuQM2YwTJug

Papers for the Annual General Meeting, including nomination forms for all vacant Committee positions, will be available through the Print Council website at: www.printcouncil.org.au/agm-2026/.

I’ll put a link to the PCA website - where you can also register for the AGM / in my bio.

I love that Sir David Attenborough’s birthday fell on #worldmigratorybirdday yesterday! Like so many others I largely attribute my love of the natural world to the amazing images and stories he beamed into my life, and the lives of my children. The complexity and beauty and wonder he conveyed!!! He fostered such a sense of curiosity, and such an awareness of the agency of all living things! Thank you Sir David and wishing you the happiest of birthdays.

Also, this image is of the mudflats of Western Port of Warn Marin. It’s these amazing kilometres of rich, life-filled mud that make the Bay perfect habitat for the thousands of migratory shorebirds that have been spending summers here for Millenia.

Happy World Migratory Bird Day!!! I’m celebrating today with a callout for prints to join the Overwintering Project Print Portfolio for an upcoming exhibition in 2027 at @latroberegionalgallery !! The exhibition will include the entire Portfolio (we have over 400 so far!) and will celebrate a decade of the Overwintering Project!!

Artists from Australia and New Zealand are invited to create a new print in response to their local migratory shorebird habitat, and donate 2 prints from their edition to the Project - one to exhibit, and one to sell. All funds raised are donated to @birdlifeoz to support the migratory shorebird research and conservation projects of the Australasian Wader Studies Group, BirdLife’s special interest group for shorebird studies. So far the Project has raised $51,000 for shorebird conservation!!! All prints, as long as they fit within the size & subject limits of the Project, and the artist is 18 years or over, are accepted!

Deadline November 1!! For details visit the Project website www.theoverwinteringproject.com (link in profile) or email me at overwinteringproject@gmail.com

I look forward to hearing from you!!

What a wonderful exhibition!! The Firestation Print Studio’s artists book prize exhibition opened this week and it is such a trove of the imaginative and the exquisite!! In fact it has pretty much turned the entire gallery itself into an artists book with different and surprising chapters at each turn. Congratulations to all the artists, to the wonderful @fpsfirestationprintstudio people for their loving curation, to judges Marian Crawford and Susan Long for so thoughtfully undertaking the challenge of choosing the winners, and of course to those who received prizes and honourable mentions.

I had to share the full magic of @karenneal4 and @antoniette_martin ‘s amazing book - especially as Karen was kind enough to demonstrate how it opens to me. But each book has its own magic. The exhibition is on till May 2. Not to be missed!!

***SAVE THE PCA!!!***

If you are a member of the Print Council of Australia/PCA @printcouncilofaustralia, on April 1 you should have received an email from the PCA announcing notice of an Extraordinary General Meeting. This is a critical meeting for members to attend in order to SAVE THE PCA!! The Council is in a state of financial crisis, and we the membership are being asked to vote on whether to ‘wind up the association’. I believe that it is really important to vote NO to this resolution - which you can do by attending the meeting or by proxy.

Voting NO will allow the PCA to continue in some form - albeit probably much reduced - and will, importantly, maintain its
- charitable status
- history and
- base membership

If, like me, the PCA has given you access to the most extraordinary print community, kept you in touch with print projects and people across Australia and the world, given you the inspiration and information to keep pushing your practice or been precious to you in any way, then please, please turn up to the meeting via Zoom or send a proxy form to vote NO to winding up the PCA!!

The meeting is at 7.00pm (Melbourne time) on Wednesday April 22. If you are a lapsed member but care about this, please consider renewing your membership!!!! If you did not receive the email please DM me with your email address and I will forward it to you.

AND PLEASE SHARE THIS POST, ADD IT TO YOUR STORY AND/OR TAG FRIENDS!!!!

Hurry in for the last chance to see four lovely exhibitions by Penny Walker-Keefe, me, Lilu Hosking and Sharon Crabb!! On show at @yarrasculpturegallery 11am - 4pm today till Sunday.

‘Welcome to the Jam Session’ by Penny Walker-Keefe @pennyw_kpresents a series of airy vessels sculpted from guitar strings and polymer clay. As the exhibition notes say, these are containers ‘that cannot contain…ineffective urns for the ashes of rock stars’ - ‘each string carries traces of its previous user, the sweat and skin of sound embedded at a microscopic level’ (Zara Sully).

My exhibition, ‘The Presence of Absence/Absence of Presence: on Losing my Mother’ arose from a conversation with my friend Helen @helen_kocis_edwards who suggested the idea of ‘departure’ as an exhibition theme. Her first trout was airports - mine was death, which then crystallised into an exhibition about my mother which is both a homage to her and an exploration of the complexities of our mother/daughter relationship. Mum died in 2021 and was also an artist.

The third exhibition is Lilu Hosking’s @thisisliludotcom first solo - and it is magical!! Forms rise and fall with a watery grace, evoking jellyfish or dancers. ‘We Gather, We Rise, We Fall’ ‘reflects on the cycles of nature, their duration, rhythm and caring reliability. Its scale intentionally includes the human body.’

In the projection space is Sharon Crabb’s @interiorlux lyrical ‘Dream of a Landscape’, a projection and soundscape ‘presented in the form of a Japanese scroll (that)…reflects on the multifaceted relationship we have with nature’.

The exhibitions resonate in concert - each has an element of melancholy, of honouring the ephemeral. Each has a unique beauty that celebrates different aspects of the rich human experience of life. Enjoy!!

My solo exhibition ‘The Absence of Presence/Presence of Absence: on losing my mother’ is on till April 5 at @yarrasculpturegallery - open 11-4 Thursday-Sunday. I’ll be in the gallery from 11am this Saturday if you want to come & say hello, and 2-4pm@annieartworking is running a workshop on The Mother-Daughter Terrain: A workshop to honour grief and loss.

Life today doesn’t make much room to hold grief. Losses occur and the world expects us to move on so quickly. In this workshop we will create a space to honour grief through conversation, artmaking and writing. Although our focus will be on the mother-daughter terrain, you are very welcome to attend if your grief takes another form.

Places are limited. To book please email kategorringesmith@gmail.com
