Day 2 of Collagraph workshop with Kay Watanabe. Wow! Thank you Kay for conducting this inspirational workshop with your wealth of knowledge and generous spirit. Thanks for the pics @sande_bruch and for volunteering to assist Kay over the two days.
Thank you also to Anastasia @akartprint and Penny @darling2.penny for volunteering to assist individuals during the workshop.
Collagraph, or collograph, is a versatile printmaking technique in which impressions are printed from a plate made in a low-toxic way, with easily available materials.
The plates are made by glueing various materials onto a rigid base and/or by cutting into its surface. Collagraph can be printed as a relief print by hand and as intaglio mostly by using an etching press.
Kay Watanabe is a Brisbane-based printmaker and has created many of her works using this technique and, in this workshop, she will share her knowledge about how to create a collagraph prints effectively.
This is a two-day, fast-paced workshop, and is suitable for those who would like to try printmaking for the first time as well as printmakers who would like to extend their practice.
On Day 1, participants will create relief print to learn the basics of collagraph. They will also create plates to print on Day 2.
On Day 2, participants will print intaglio collagraphs.
They will also learn such techniques as chine-colle, a la poupee and a relief roll up.
This workshop will coincide with Kay’s solo show at Firestation Print Studio.
About the tutor:
Originally from Japan, Kay Watanabe is a visual artist based in Brisbane.
She is a printmaker and also uses such media as painting, drawing, photography, small sculptures and artist books. Kay’s works are themed around the relationship between humanity and nature.
Kay extensively exhibits in Australia and internationally, both in solo shows and group shows, physically and online, and teaches printmaking at workshops. In May 2026, she will show her works in a solo exhibition at Firestation Print Studio.

Happy faces, busy studio, fabulous print at INTAGLIO CLUB! Book the next session Sat June 20th via our website SHOP
You might have heard of FPS’s wonderful Print Clubs?
Intaglio Club is for printing drypoint and collagraph and etching. (Acid etching will not be undertaken in these sessions). Pre-etched plates can be printed.
This is for those who already have at least a little experience in these processes. You need to bring along your own project to work on. These are not teaching sessions, instead, they are supervised sessions, where an experienced supervisor is on hand to assist and provide valuable advice.
Printmakers share the presses in a collegiate encouraging creative space.
You need to bring your own printmaking tools, plate to work on, and print paper.
Black ink is provided.
We do sell paper and coloured ink in our office.
We supply newsprint for proofing, presses for use, press blankets, black ink and solutions and rags for clean-up. Remember to wear an apron and closed toed shoes.
Before leaving at the end of the day we ask participants to clean and sanitise their workstation, incl. bench top, press wheels and any shared tools.
Intaglio Club will be run by experienced printmakers and educators, Liz Millsom, Bronwyn Rees and Laura Osborne.
We look forward to welcoming you to our next session. Book via our Website Shop or over the phone during office hours, Wed-Sat 11am - 4pm.
