Had a great time performing at Quadrant V2.0 last night! Thanks to @kyleellisevans and the entire @dadalab.io team for putting this together. Shout out to @brandon_stargrave for the awesome led speaker platforms and @vvilmstock for photographing! It’s always amazing to perform in this venue and with this Austin community.

I'll be performing a new RGB.VGA.VOLT composition live at the @oddsandendsfilmfestival in Charlottesville, VA this Saturday, February 21.

This will be my first RGB.VGA.VOLT performance in over a year, with brand new visuals and algorithmic controls developed in @c74connect's Max/MSP environment for upcoming 2026 shows (more announcements coming soon!).

We are excited to share that Odds & Ends will be hosting Chicago-based multimedia artist James Connolly, who will be preforming RGB.VGA.VOLT (2026) at this year’s festival! The audio-visual performance will take place on Saturday, February 21st before one of our two shorts programs! 📺🔌💡

RGB.VGA.VOLT is a psychedelic real-time audio/video composition using a custom-made video synthesizer that hybridizes analog and digital technologies.

James Connolly is a Chicago-based artist, educator, archivist, and developer. His videos, open-source tools, and real-time audio/video performances undermine the interfaces and break through the algorithms of digital and analog systems, examining hidden power structures and liberating latent aesthetic materialities in cathartic and captivating compositions. Connolly has presented work at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Currents New Media Festival in Santa Fe; Ann Arbor Film Festival; Intermediale’s Videosyntezy3 in Legnica, Poland; Bideodromo International Experimental Film and Video Festival in Bilbao, Spain; South by Southwest in Austin; the GLI.TC/H Festivals in Chicago; and the Vancouver New Music Festival, among others. He is an Associate Professor, Adj. in the departments of Film, Video, New Media, and Animation and Art History, Theory, and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

My piece Cathode Ray Algorithms will have its Chicago premiere at the Chicago Underground Film Festival next week in the Vox Machinarum shorts program playing Friday, September 19 at 5:30 pm and Sunday, September 21 at 12:00 pm!Ticket links in bio.

From the @chicagoundergroundfilmfest write-up:
"Psychedelia pulses through a wall of hacked cathode ray tubes, each one wired to sing and shake. Algorithmic audio drives flickering visual chaos, oscillating between pure signal and radiant abstraction—as electromagnetic coils jitter analog monitors into a synesthetic swarm. Built on open-source tools and glitch aesthetics, this piece resurrects obsolete tech into a throbbing visual music ritual."

I am psyched to be programmed into the Vox Machinarum screening, featuring amazing work by Monica Panzarino @monypnyc, Jesse Malmed @marmblatt, @darrinmartin, and others!

It was surreal to leave the Roger Brown Study Collection for the last time yesterday after working there for 19 years and managing it for 5. It is sad to mark the end of the RBSC as a preserved historic artist home and studio museum and Special Collection of SAIC, but I am happy to see the collection go to the Kohler Art Preserve, where it will be cared for alongside the collections of Roger’s close friends Barbara Rossi and Ray Yoshida.

It was an incredible experience working with phenomenal people over the years, including Lisa Stone, and getting to know Greg Brown, his wife, Benedicte, and other members of Roger’s family. The RBSC Steering Committee, the countless great faculty, students, and staff at SAIC, and the entire Library & Special Collections department have all been great colleagues. Connecting with curators, writers, artists, and museum professionals from around the world through this position was life-changing.

I’m sorry for the whole RBSC community that we couldn’t have a farewell event to mourn the loss of this incredible space. We closed for renovations in January 2023 and never opened due to an unfortunate lead dust contamination of the collection. The last tour of the RBSC occurred, without us realizing it, on December 25, 2022, with friends and family of the RBSC. Over the past two years, the collection was successfully cleaned by an amazing team of people, but was sold before it could be reinstalled.

I’m proud of the work I did alongside the dozens of RBSC student workers and volunteers. We created an immersive and interactive space that honored an artist whose life was tragically cut short by HIV/AIDS, his partner George Veronda, and countless other people whose work they collected. In recent years, we expanded our digital teaching tools through advanced custom databases, making our collections more accessible to visitors and researchers, even when we were forced to close. My student workers helped turn the museum into a highly effective learning resource and a welcoming space for all visitors. The number of amazing people whose work contributed to the RBSC is extensive, so I’ll hit the comments.

Thank you all.

It was an honor to share the stage with Dan Sandin, Lee Blalock, Jon Satrom, Amy Beste, and Gordon Fung last week at a sold out Gene Siskel Film Center theater for The Radical Art of the Sandin Image Processor. I demoed and performed the IP live on stage, processing feeds of the audience and optical feedback using a patch activating all modules. Gordon Fung and Amy Beste curated a program of amazing historical works co-presented by the @videodatabank and @mediaburnarchive featuring Jane Veeder, Phil Morton, Barbara Sykes, Janice Tanoka, Lyn Blumenthal and others. @0lee1lee0lee1 and @jonsatrom premiered amazing new videos incorporating footage from the Image Processor from sessions we had in recent months. Audience members interacted with the IP as we met and reconnect with several generations of artists from Chicago and beyond who have been inspired and influenced by Dan’s legendary work.

Still feeling the good vibes from this!

Huge thanks to the @saic_cate team of Amy Beste, Gordon Fung @gordon.d.fung, and Sophia Farmer; our professional IP handlers Lucas Bucoltz @westtexasmetrosexual, Dan Holmes, Syd Ross@omniasol.art, Gordon Fung, and Amy Beste; @filmcenter staff; and the @saic_fvnma department (including chairs @fmoffe and Bruce Jenkins) for supporting the IP in recent years, creating a truly unique and powerful resource for students.

Tomorrow at 1pm, “Eight-Minute Romp Through SAIC’s Sandin Image Processor” will have its U.S. festival premiere at Athens International Film + Video Festival @aifvf in Athens, Ohio! @jxconno and I both screened videos at the 2018 AIFVF and are excited to be a part of this fantastic festival again! Thank you, @aifvf! ⚡️🎛✝️🤠🤠✝️🎛⚡️

More video stills from “Eight-Minute Romp Through SAIC’s Sandin Image Processor”, my new video in collaboration with @jxconno. ⚡️🎛✝️🤠🤠✝️🎛⚡️

For this piece, I made two hand-knit recreations of the hat Chicago artist and toolmaker Dan Sandin wore in his classic 1973 video, “Five-minute Romp through the IP.” For those who are curious, both hats were made with Patons brand Shetland Chunky yarn (75% acrylic and 25% wool) using the Bubble Beanie Hat pattern by @studioknit. The hats’ texture was created with what’s called a “bobble stitch.” The black and silver bands are made of felt, silver studs, and hot glue, then sewn to the hats, which are finally stuffed with polyfiber filling to give them their shape. ✨🧶🧶✨

Synopis: An homage to Chicago artist and toolmaker Dan Sandin’s 1973 video, “Five-minute Romp through the IP”, in which Sandin demos the Image Processor (IP), a modular analog video synthesizer he built the same year, and encouraged artists to copy in his “Distribution Religion” manifesto. In this video, artists James Connolly and Monica Panzarino perform with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s IP, a historic tool, as it was one of the first image processors built by Sandin. The artists wear recreations of the unique hat Sandin wore in his 1973 video, which are hand-knit by Panzarino. This piece celebrates the physicality of hardware electronics and the DIY spirit of all things handmade.

This week I’ll be sharing some stills from my new video in collaboration with @jxconno, “Eight-Minute Romp Through SAIC’s Sandin Image Processor.” We recorded this video in July 2024 at @saic_fvnma in Chicago and it premiered in September 2024 at @wavefield.nyc in Brooklyn. Next week we will share a short excerpt. ⚡️🎛✝️🤠🤠✝️🎛⚡️

I am super excited to participate in “The Radical Art of the Sandin Image Processor” Conversations at the Edge @saic_cate program at the Gene Siskel @filmcenter on Thursday, April 17 (3 weeks from today). I will demo and perform the Film, Video, New Media, and Animation department’s Sandin Image Processor live on stage after a screening of historic videos and new commissioned works by friends Lee Blalock @0lee1lee0lee1 and Jon Satrom @jonsatrom . A panel discussion with the legendary Dan Sandin, Jon, Lee, and myself will follow. The audience will also have an opportunity interact with the IP.

Shout out to Amy Beste @ms.beste for organizing this, Gordon Fung @gordon.d.fung for programming it, Dan Holmes, Syd Ross @omniasol.art , and Lucas Bucoltz @westtexasmetrosexual for assisting us with moving the IP, Sean Hallowell @isorhythmics for repairing and maintaining our IP, the Video Data Bank @videodatabank and Media Burn @mediaburnarchive for partnering, and of course Dan Sandin for making this all possible. Credit to the @saic_fvnma department for supporting the preservation of this historic device. Huge shoutout to @joncates for his work preserving the IP and the Phil Morton Memorial Research Archive and integrating both into the SAIC FVNMA curriculum to make all of this possible. And huge credit to Nick Ciontea/Brown Shoes Only for servicing our SAIC FVNMA Image Processor.
