Saddened to hear about the passing of Seymour Bernstein. Sixteen years ago, I had the honor of studying with him when I was at NYU. To this day, I still value the three most important things I learned about piano from him: the preparatory upswing of the wrist before the first notes of a phrase, improved voiced chords, and the use of rotational movements to facilitate momentum and strength towards the weak fingers. Things that were previously a struggle to accomplish on the piano all of a sudden were freed through proper choreography of movements of the entire mechanism of fingers to arm. A deeper understanding of the artistry of music was shown to me. On top of that, Seymour was a caring and generous soul. When I told him my mom had lost her job, he started to refuse payment for my lessons. He gave me countless scores because he saw me playing from bad editions printed on standard paper and hole punched into a binder. When I told him I liked the Russian Tea Cookies from Citarella that he offered to me one lesson, he started buying a box for me every lesson. One of my fondest memories of him was performing in his studio class with my fellow peers followed by dinner at Dallas BBQ and afterwards rode my fixed gear bike through Times Square completely tipsy on margaritas to get home 70 blocks away.

I wish we had stayed better in touch the past decade, but goodbye Seymour. You will be missed.
