"The Scoriae of the Bomb" investigates the lasting legacy of French nuclear tests conducted in the Algerian Sahara between 1960 and 1966. This secret military programme left lasting contamination, inherited illnesses, and ecological devastation, which continue to affect local communities. The copper imported by the French, and still used in local crafts, carries radioactive residue, becoming a material witness to this slow colonial violence.
Developed in collaboration with French and Algerian NGOs, activists, and journalists, the project challenges dominant French narratives through a counter-archive grounded in non-Western, collective approaches to justice. A handcrafted copper fountain invites memorial, a documentary exposes the lack of compensation for the Algerian victims, and booklets critique current reparation systems while proposing alternatives.
