𝘙𝘜𝘐𝘋𝘖 𝘛𝘖𝘝𝘈𝘙: Camilo Lara @ims_mis and Eblis Álvarez @meridianbrothers didn’t necessarily need a concept to justify working together. Cumbia already did that work decades ago. It left Colombia, moved north, got rebuilt in Mexico into something louder and more elastic.
Mexican Institute of Sound, Lara’s long-running musical outlet, filters cumbia, dub, hip-hop, pirate-radio energy and the chaotic pulse of Mexico City into a propellant, shape-shifting strain of electronic tropical music. Álvarez has built in Meridian Brothers a curiously strong sound, channeling Colombian tropical music through warped psychedelia and tape-hiss surrealism. Which is to say, Alvarez and Lara, longtime friends, were already playing with similar material, just from different points on the spectrum.
Ruido Tovar, their new collaboration coming out May 22 on @ansoniarecords, leans directly into that shared lineage, especially the strange and fertile stretch where Colombian cumbia collided with Mexican pop spectacle. In anticipation of the album’s release, Lara spoke with @liledit about the birth of Ruido Tovar and the strange, elastic history of tropical music flowing between Mexico and Colombia. Join us this Thursday, for a listening session @darlingbyseanbrock featuring the album + other Ansonia classics. Free RSVP ~ link in bio ~

¿Cuál Es La Razón? ( ft. @natalialafourcade ) is now available on all streaming platforms!
When folks heard the Ghost Train Orchestra arrangement on our song “What Is the Reason for It?”, I had a few people remark about how “it has a Mexican groove”. So, we approached Camilo Lara at Mexican Institute of Sound, whom I’ve known for years about doing a remix of the tune. The original version is a duet between myself and Hayley Williams, but Camilo and I thought about having those lines be sung in Spanish on this version, which Camilo turned into a wonderful cumbia. (Cumbia is a groove that originated with the Afro Columbian community and has since mutated and spread throughout Latin America- you can’t help dancing to it... the band and I recently saw an amazing cumbia band in New Orleans!)
Who would that singer be? Well, not too long ago I joined one of my favorite artists in the whole world, Natalia Lafourcade, at her concert at Carnegie Hall. A dream come true for me. So, I approached her with the idea and not only did she agree, she wrote completely new lyrics for the Spanish verses (that are not simply translations of the previous English version). Beautiful. Another dream comes true! Enjoy.

✨September is going to be amazing with these shows of the even more amazing Mexican Institute of Sound!
