imagineNATIVE
The world's largest presenter of Indigenous film and media arts. #imagineNATIVE
The imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival is excited to welcome you to our in-person Festival in Toronto from June 2-7, 2026. With an inspiring lineup of feature films, curated short film programs, live-performance events, exhibitions, and so much more, we have something for everyone!
For our 2026 Festival, we are choosing to open up spaces for much-needed dialogue that reflects what many of our artists and audiences are feeling at this moment. We want to share stories that will empower our continued resistance to the status quo. We will see works that uplift hope and strength and continue to speak truth to power. We know that Indigenous knowledge and ways of being are true pathways to a sustainable future. These ways are ancient. They have been laid out for us as the original instructions of how humanity can coexist with our Mother Earth. No borders, man-made laws, nor colonial governments can supersede the original caretaking instructions of the lands that Indigenous Nations have been carrying since time immemorial.
Kicking off our 26th annual Festival is our Opening Night Screening feature AKI, directed by Darlene Naponse, an exquisite meditation on the relationship between community and the earth. AKI stuns with unforgettable cinematography matched by an ingenious soundtrack by Juno Award–nominated cellist Cris Derksen and multi-instrumentalist Julian Cote.
With over 126 works as part of the officially selected program representing 56 distinct Indigenous Nations from 20 respective countries, we welcome everyone to celebrate with $10 tickets for film screenings, and many free, pay-what-you-can, or low-barrier rated events.
Celebrating the close of our Festival is the Closing Night Screening of Uiksaringitara (Wrong Husband), directed by Zacharias Kunuk, a traditional Inuit tale about a betrothed love lost, the promise of a new life gone awry, and the hope of love returned, with a lingering troll and magic realism steeped throughout. With authentic performances by first-time actors, Wrong Husband brings Inuit culture and folklore to life in stunning cinematic fashion.

Presented by imagineNATIVE Institute in partnership with the @StoryBoard.Collectiveand with the support of the Schmidt Family Foundation, @cmf.fmc, and @IndigenousScreen, imagineNATIVE Institute selects four participants for the Indigenous Series Lab.
Entering this year’s cohort are Ajuawak Kapashasit, Erin Lau, Kristi Lane Sinclair, and Stevie-Ray Strangling Wolf, along with their projects, to work with staff and mentors, Blackhorse Lowe and Paula Devonshire, to develop a strong pilot script, pitch deck and oral pitch to share with upcoming international film markets.
The Indigenous Series Lab is a multi-phase, professional training program designed to support Indigenous writers in developing compelling scripted television series. Over the course of a six-month intensive, participants receive a stipend and engage in a structured process that builds both creative confidence and industry readiness.
The Lab combines rigorous story development with direct market access, including a residency at The Storyboard Collective House in Geneva, participation in the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, and opportunities to attend and pitch at major international markets such as TIFF and the Berlinale. Throughout the program, participants also connect with established industry professionals through curated guest speaker sessions, gaining insight into the realities of development, production, and global distribution.
“The imagineNATIVE Institute is excited to partner with The Storyboard Collective to support Indigenous storytellers in bringing their series to life, connecting them with mentors, resources, and real pathways to markets,” said David Morrison, imagineNATIVE Associate Director. “This lab is about creating space for storytellers to develop authentic and ambitious work.”
"StoryBoard is proud to partner on this lab that provides the conditions: time, resources and market access; for these stories to move forward without compromise,” said Laure de Peretti de la Rocca, executive director of The StoryBoard Collective. “This cohort brings together four distinct voices and a powerful range of unapologetic Indigenous stories."

It is with profound sadness that imagineNATIVE acknowledges the passing of a brilliant artist and special friend of the Festival, Cree cellist and composer Cris Derksen over the weekend. We spent the past few days taking in all of the stories and memories of Cris shared by the vast community of artists that are deeply impacted by this sudden and tragic loss.
Cris has been a familiar presence at the Festival for many years, as a programmed artist and supporter. They elevated many of our programmed works with their gift over the years, including this year’s Opening Night film, AKI, directed by Darlene Naponse.
Some of the programmed works composed by Cris include:
Pow.Wow.Wow (2011) by Lisa Jackson
Treading Water (2014) by Jérémie Wookey and Janelle Wookey
How to Steal A Canoe (2016) by Amanda Strong
Four Faces of the Moon (2016) by Amanda Strong
kahkiyaw kâtahkotanânaw (2021) by Barry Bilinsky, Moe Clark, Cris Derksen, and Jade Ehlers
Broken Angel (2022) by Jules A Koostachin
Cris’ gift was one that transcended genres and spanned many artistic fields from theatre, film, live performance, dance, orchestra, and the runway. She was a mentor, collaborator, friend, and loved one to many Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists both nationally and internationally.
For those who had the great pleasure in experiencing Cris perform it was obvious they were a talented musician who like all great artists put in the work and dedication to achieve their level of brilliance. Her music has been woven into so many spaces, and for that we are grateful.
We are holding the Indigenous arts community in our hearts as we navigate the grief surrounding this profound loss. To their family and loved ones, we acknowledge this immense loss and our thoughts are with you at this time.We are also thinking of Cris’ wife Bobby and sending prayers of strength and healing at this time.
Nyá:wen Cris for sharing your gifts with us while uplifting and inspiring others to create. You have broken new ground on the possibilities of what could be created with your instrument and left behind a beautiful legacy that will continue to inspire and influence new generations of talent. Rest in Power.

📢 Attention Indigenous actors interested in a live table read event! 📢
ACTRA Toronto is proud to partner on @imaginenative Institute’s Screenwriting Shorts Lab, a professional development program for four Indigenous creatives looking to write a short film script. The selected screenwriters will develop an original short script from treatment to final draft, working closely with Indigenous story editors and select imagineNATIVE staff throughout the process.
We are looking for Indigenous performers to take part in table reads of these scripts!
The table reads will take place in person on June 4 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the CBC Studios Atrium (250 Front St. West, Toronto). Four scripts (9-12 pages in length) developed in the lab will be read by selected group of performers. Performers will be reading for several roles across different scripts, and sometimes within the same script. ACTRA Toronto members (Full, Apprentice, or AABP) in good standing will be prioritized for the roles. Only performers over the age of majority will be considered.
An honorarium of $400 will be provided to the selected readers.
The call for applications will close on May 15, 2026 at 5:00 pm ET.
Head to the link in our profile to apply now!
