Last week, Toronto Arts Council and Toronto Arts Foundation jointly launched All in for the Arts, an ambitious 5-year strategic plan that aligns with the City of Toronto’s new 10-year culture plan and reinforces Toronto’s position as a global creative leader.

Our vision is simple: to strengthen the arts and, in turn, our city.

To do so, we will:
🚧 Build for the future by investing in artists, cultural spaces, and creative leadership, we are building a resilient creative city.

💫 Transform supports by making funding, resources, and opportunities more equitable, accessible, and meaningful.

🤝 Connect communities through creative experiences that build belonging, cross-cultural understanding, and well-being in every corner of Toronto.

🌍 Lead globally. Toronto’s creativity belongs on the world stage. We’re building global connections that amplify our artists, attract cultural exchange, and position Toronto as a world-class city for the arts.

📊 Make the case through data, storytelling, and advocacy — that the arts are essential to Toronto’s identity, economy, and quality of life.

Highlighting the beauty and depth of Korean traditional arts through the work of Jihyun Back (@100ghyun)✨

Jihyun Back is a Toronto-based Korean traditional dancer, drummer, and choreographer who has been actively presenting performances and leading workshops across Canada since 2020. Through dance and percussion, her work creates opportunities for cultural exchange while sharing the richness of Korean traditional arts.

The first featured work is Jihyun Back playing at Arts in the Parks in 2025 with Raw Taiko.

The second featured work is a collaborative performance inspired by Samgomu, a Korean traditional drum dance that combines movement and rhythm using three drums. Blending Korean traditional rhythms with Taiko drumming, the piece was developed during Jihyun’s Artist-in-Residence with Raging Asian Women Taiko Drummers and presented as part of Moving Between (2025).

The third featured work is based on Seoljanggu, a Korean traditional drum dance performed while carrying the drum on the body. Combining Korean traditional rhythms with Taiko drumming, the piece was also presented as part of Moving Between (2025).

From 2024–2025, Jihyun was an Artist-in-Residence with RAW Taiko (@rawtaiko) and continues collaborating with the organization through performances and workshops.

Red Dress Day is a call to remember, to honour, and to demand justice. ❤️

May 5, also known as the National Awareness Day for Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people (MMIWG2S+), is an important day to reflect, learn, and raise awareness about this ongoing crisis. It’s also a day to support Indigenous communities, and to honour the lives of those missing and murdered. Red Dress Day was inspired by Métis artist Jamie Black after she hung hundreds of empty red dresses in public places to represent missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

This violence is an ongoing human rights emergency rooted in colonization and systemic racism. Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit people continue to face disproportionate levels of harm, disappearance, and murder. In Canada, more than 6 in 10 Indigenous women have experienced physical or sexual assault in their lifetime.

Red dresses hanging empty serve as powerful reminders of lives stolen, voices silenced, and futures disrupted. They make the invisible visible.

More than remembrance, this day is about action:
❤️ Wear red and encourage others to wear red dresses, pins, or shirts
❤️ Participate in memorial walks, community fires, and smudging ceremonies
❤️ Learn more through Indigenous-led resources, workshops, and webinars
❤️ Amplify Indigenous voices
❤️ Support Indigenous organizations
❤️ Demand full implementation of the 231 Calls for Justice

As Lori Campbell said, “The chances are if you know an Indigenous person, they’re related to someone who’s gone missing or murdered.”

We will not look away. We will not forget. Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ people is long overdue.

See more ways you can take action! (link in bio) https://www.mmiwg-ffada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Calls_for_Justice.pdf

Selina (@selcallum), our Communications Coordinator, is the first staff artist to be featured in the new Collective Canvas Gallery at Toronto Arts Council and Foundation 🎉

What’s normally a lunchroom and meeting space is now also our gallery to showcase the creativity within our own team. This is an initiative brought to life by Peter Kingstone (Program Manager, Visual and Media Arts) and Georgia Champagnie (Senior Office Coordinator)🎉

Selina’s exhibit features a mix of work from her time in university alongside portraits she captured of the 2025 Toronto Arts Awards finalists.

At Toronto Arts, we don’t just support artists, we are artists, and spaces like this remind us of the importance of creativity in everything we do.💐

Stay tuned to see who will be exhibiting next in July 👀🎨

Thank you to everyone who joined us last week for Strengthening the Case for the Arts: Data, Impact & Advocacy!

We’re so grateful to have shared space with such thoughtful, curious, and engaged members of our community.

A special thank you to Kadija de Paula from the Toronto Arts Council @torontoartscouncil for sharing the incredible work happening in Toronto around data collection in the arts, and for offering tools and approaches we can begin to adapt here in Ottawa. From exploring the value of quantitative data to unpacking meaningful ways to gather qualitative insights, the conversation was rich from start to finish.

We also had the pleasure of hearing from Frédéric Julien, Director of Research and Development at CAPACOA @capacoa_arts , who joined us for a surprise presentation and added even more depth to the discussion.

From shared challenges to new ideas, the roundtable conversations reminded us just how important this work is, and how much we can learn from one another.

👀Interested in being part of the ongoing conversation? Learn more about our Social Impact Evaluation in the Arts Action Lab at the link in our bio.
