‘Her Sorcery’ from ‘The Voidist’ originally released on @teepeerecords. This was the first IW solo record that was (sort of) well received by press that also acknowledge me as something more than a sideman in the YYYs, which is funny because I had already made 2 solo records and before that had 2 bands (lowercase and alaska!) both of which had released multiple records. I felt like I’d been putting music out and writing songs for several lifetimes at this point so it was shocking to get reviews that had no idea about my history up to this point. I was always on my own trip making my own world. Anyway, around this time I stopped reading my own press reports because I realized it was all bullshit and besides that it fucked my head up.People see you in certain ways, don’t believe their story. Knowthe truth of self.

For this revisitation: This is a joyous love song on a day where you feel like it visited you after a long period of dormancy. Call it muse, call it a memory.

Peeling back more layers, this is ‘God Is Not A Mountain’ from Great Eastern Sun, an album that I recorded in 2012 but held back from release until 2017. After I was done recording it, I just felt like I needed space to understand it again. It cut too close to the bone. So I shelved it for five years. Then @nomadeelrecords put it out initially on some beautiful red vinyl, some copies even came with a small pyramid.

It was self-recorded mostly on my GarageBand and I didn’t even have a vocal mic at the time so I sang into the internal mic on my laptop while holding it up to my mouth. Then I would send the tracks out to friends like @bobb_brujo @brianchase123 @hotruben @gregory_burns and they would add their parts and send it back and then I mixed it. It just worked and came together. It was totally primitive and raw but just what I needed when I was going through that year. The outlier was the cover of ‘there’s a new world opening for me’ by the kinks that @pinkmountaintops and I recorded during the grim tower sessions, but it felt right on this album.

Anyway, I can’t pretend, this song still makes me feel very much like singing.

Since I’ve gotten so much hate about this visualizer, I’m reposting this text I wrote. Haters why don’t you go after @geesebandnyc or @chaoticgoodprojects instead. There’s bigger fish to fry.

I’m very conflicted about A.I. and would never use it for creating music, the only reason I’m ok with this is because it’s a visualizer, not an official video. @the_messengers_of_deception spent time on this and crafted it, if you watch the video it’s actually got nuance and is cool for what it is. It’s not just a computer throwing a bunch of random images together. There’s layers happening there that required a human with consciousness and vision. At this point as an independent artist I have to take what I can take what I can get and I have a responsibility to explore what my resources are. Sorry if you don’t like this but at this point I’ve fully self-funded the entire recording and the 3 official videos, have a child to support and am making no money off my music. I am currently out of any more funds to promote my release. My music is in danger of just disappearing into the void. The nefarious system in place (Spotify, Instagram, etc.) that makes the fucking algorithm overlook artist like me has to be destroyed or used by me in ways that I see fit. Since destruction is not going to happen, I’ve chosen to move forward with a modicum of control.
