MONK iN PIECES

@meredithmonk – composer, performer, and interdisciplinary artist – is one of the great artistic pioneers of our time, yet her profound cultural influence is largely unrecognized. With Monk’s music at its center, and featuring interviews with @bjork and @davidbyrneofficial , @monkinpieces is a mosaic that mirrors the structure of Monk’s own work, and illuminates her wildly original vocabulary of sound and imagery.

As a female artist in the male-dominated downtown arts scene of the 1960s and ‘70s, Monk had to fight for recognition and resources. Early reviews in the New York Times were vicious and sexist: “A disgrace to the name of dancing,” wrote one critic,, and “so earnestly strange in a talented little-girl way,” wrote another. Yet as her celebrated contemporary, @philipglass , says, “she, among all of us, was – and still is – the uniquely gifted one.”

In the film’s final chapters, Monk faces mortality. We see her warily entrust her masterpiece, ATLAS, to director Yuval Sharon and singer Joanna Lynn-Jacobs for a new production at the Los Angeles Philharmonic. For 60 years, Monk has directed and performed in all of her music theater works; now she must learn to let go. What will happen to such singular work after she is gone?

MARIA W HORN

@mariawhorn is a composer whose work explores the inherent spectral properties of sound. Her compositions employ a varied instrumentation ranging from analog synthesizers to choir, string instruments, pipe organ and various chamber music formats. Synthetic sound is often paired with acoustic instruments in order to extend the instruments timbral capacities with precise control of timbre, tuning and texture.

Her debut album Kontrapoetik (2018) is a historical investigation, and a kind of counter-exorcism tackling the deceivingly serene, yet turmoiled past of her home region Ångermanland in the North of Sweden. Dies Irae (2021) derives from the resonant frequencies of an empty machine hall from the mining region of Bergslagen and Vita Duvans Lament (2020) is a sonic excavation of what used to be the only panoptic cell prison built in Sweden.

In addition to her artistic practice she is also the co-founder of Swedish record label @_xkatedral

MAGDA DROZD

@magda_drozd_ , born in Warsaw, is a composer, violinist, and sound artist living in Zürich and London. She has been releasing her music on the Swiss label @praesenseditionen since 2019 and further releases have followed on @hallowgroundlabel for their compilation ‘Epiphanies’, on @flamingpines for the concept album ‘Cassette Album’ by Salomé Voegelin, and on her own label @rivercore_records , a platform for experimental music.

Together with Nicola Genovese, she founded the duo @sopraterra_sound , who released the LP ‘Seven Dances to Embrace the Hollow’ on Präsens Editionen and La Becque Editions in 2025.

Previous coverage and airplay have come from The Wire, The Quietus, BBC Radio 6 Music, NTS Radio, Spex, self-titled Magazine, Fact Mag, Ransom Note and Boomkat and she has toured with her projects across Switzerland, Europe, Asia and South Africa.

“The Slovenian trio conjure strange beauty from a vast arsenal of global instruments on an album that hums, drones and dances with intense power.” - The Guardian

The intertwining of diverse musical approaches and tools, histories of sounds and unbridled musical imagination and craftmanship is the expansive guiding principle of the @siromband trio, whose members stem from the regions of Prekmurje, Tolminsko and Kras.

More than a dozen instruments can be found in the repertoire of Iztok Koren, Samo Kutin and Ana Kravanja. ‘In the Wind of Night Hard-Fallen Incantations Whisper’ is arguably the sharpest evocation yet of the group’s highly collective music process, enveloping rustic melodic folklore, outernational textures, non-linear song structures and dissonance, and a buzzing ambiance that can at times feel like an ecstatic ritual.
