Ahead of next week’s @seasoning_festival, we hear from Stroud’s very own @mrmulattoes, @lovellious_, @alexmerryart, @akashicd, @saskiaspinstress, @monobrow73 and Neil Walker as they reflect on the deep connection between folk traditions, rave culture and the UK free party movement 🌱🔊

Rooted in protest, liberation and collective freedom, they explore how across generations people have been reclaiming dance culture through DIY gatherings, illegal parties and community-led spaces. What began as underground resistance evolved into events like the Stroud Block Party, bringing together different corners of the scene under one shared ethos: music, movement and autonomy for everyone.

These are the energies animating Seasoning Festival. For them, rave culture is a political act, a community ritual and a reminder that the dancefloor can exist anywhere.

JoyLift take over The Goods Shed on Saturday 30 May, opening one of Seasoning’s deepest channels into the hardcore continuum.

Josey Rebelle brings a selector’s intellect, providing animus to the sonic histories flowing in the room: techno, jungle, electro and Black dance music traditions held together with equal parts force and care. Grounding this… Mantra + Pinch feels like a statement in pressure and lineage, with Rupture’s jungle futurism meeting Tectonic’s Bristol dub architecture.

EM + STAV complete the circle, carrying JoyLift’s UK club mutations into the Goods Shed: technoid swing, bassweight, half-lit psychedelia and dancefloor pressure tuned for full immersion.

SOMA SOMA
Soma Soma are an 8-piece band performing their unique style of Afro-brazilian music. Based in Bristol, UK, Soma Soma are made up of Brazilian and British musicians and sing in Brazilian Portuguese. The vocal performances are powerful and emotive, conveying the passion of the music even for those who don’t understand the language.

Their music combines Brazilian styles such as the rhythmic drive of Samba, the smooth melodies of Bossa Nova, and the soulful sway of Arrocha with the vibrant energy of African Highlife, the groove of Afrobeat, and the infectious danceability of Soukous. They take an unorthodox approach to song writing which takes listeners on an emotional journey, swaying and listening intently to deep psychedelic soundscapes and dancing ecstatically to authentic Samba.

Jessie from @studiotuft has handed out hundreds of Site Festival programmes at the Farmers Market this morning.

Site Festival 2026 : Stroud's annual Art Festival

Site Festival is an annual programme of artist-led projects from SVA; events, exhibitions, talks and directory of Open Studios in the Stroud district; established in 1997.

This June, 61 artists open their studio doors in 38 locations in the Stroud Valleys over 2 weekends. Plus we have over 160 artists exhibiting and performing in exhibitions and events over the full festival programme: 3rd - 30th June.

The six Open Studios routes start from right in the centre of Stroud and stretch out right across the district from Painswick to Wotton-under-Edge, from Chavenage to Stonehouse and from Uley to Chalford.

Ann-Margreth Bohl is an artist researcher.

Her practice is rooted in sculpture, and the materiality she often returns to is rock.

With this exhibition, she invites you to imagine strata as an active and lively materiality through photography, performance, 16mm film, embroidery, and drawing.

During the week, whilst she is in the gallery, she will develop analogue film with rosemary.

Hailing from Recife, Brazil, Coco dos Pretos have proven themselves as a symbol of resilience, and cultural significance. Since 2006, the group has pioneered an innovative approach to the traditional coco rhythm, expanding and refining its sound while staying rooted in ancestral heritage.

Based in the Chão de Estrelas community, the group not only holds rehearsals but also leads a meaningful socio-cultural initiative dedicated to preserving and promoting Afro-descendant culture. Through their work, they challenge the stigmas often attached to popular traditions such as coco, and above all, they celebrate and strengthen Afro-Brazilian identity and expression.
