next wednesday we’re celebrating our first spin ‘round the sun alongside our friends at Papa Disquo !

what started as a small gathering has grown into a beautiful community of multicultural women connected through music, vinyl, curiosity and culture. over the past year we’ve shared sounds from all over the world, supported each other, started record collections, played first sets and created a space where women can explore music beyond the usual.

we’d love to invite anyone who wants to come celebrate with us. come have a dance, meet some lovely people and share a slice of cake with the community ✨

✨ Introducing Femme Forward Collective ✨

Femme Forward was born from our Her Spin On Things community. While Her Spin is a space to share, learn and talk about music in a supportive environment, some of our members wanted to take that passion further, to step behind the decks and play out.

That’s how Femme Forward Collective came to life 💫

This collective is focused on vinyl and exists to give women and women-identified music lovers the chance to share their sound publicly, to grow as selectors, and to take up space in the music scene.

We’re a multicultural group of femmes, each with our own unique sound, connected through our love for records and community. Together, we’re ready to show Sydney our grooves, our stories, and our lovely vinyls 🎶

The only requirement to be part of Femme Forward is to be part of the Her Spin On Things community, because that’s where it all begins. 💕

Born from a love of vinyl and the stories it carries, this community was created to bring women, and women-identified voices together. It’s about sharing knowledge, swapping records, talking culture and spinning ideas as much as we spin music.

We take time to slow down, to listen deeper and to create space for fresh perspectives.

🎶 Why was it created? To connect, to inspire and to celebrate the multicultural sounds that move us.

This is just the beginning and we can’t wait to share more with you.

Colombia is well known for cumbia and salsa. But how about rock made in Colombia?
Aterciopelados. El Dorado. 1995. The record that made Latin America pay attention to Colombian rock.
Andrea Echeverri picked up an electric guitar in Bogotá in a music industry dominated by men in a country where women were expected to look a certain way, sound a certain way, be a certain way. She was the antithesis of all of it. She did not ask for permission. She did not fit the model. She broke it.
The original cover was banned. Andrea had designed it with the Virgin Mary and her own face edited on top. 1995. Colombia. The label said no. That tells you everything about who she is.
The colonisers came looking for El Dorado, a city of gold. They never found it. Because the gold was never in the ground. It was always in the people.
I bought this copy in Medellín at @hitmusical on my last trip to Colombia and carried it back to Australia. Some things are too important to leave behind.
