“None of us can escape the history of our people. We should not and must not “let the past rest.” Otherwise it might be resurrected and become the new present.” Jean Améry
Everything is a story and every story is connected. Giles Duley does not photograph war. He documents love. He is a weaver of story and pattern and hope who creates from a place of curiosity and genuine humanity. His words and heart will inspire and expand you, yet he is perhaps the most grounded man I have ever met. His current exhibition, Distortion/Memory/Resilience, is at once autobiographical and wildly personal to Giles’ own journey, and an earnest invitation to find your own reflection. This is so much more than a collection of art. Here, you must bear witness to the weight of war. But shame is not the lesson here. Rather, there is awareness: without guilt, and without distance. War is not abstraction; it is intimacy. We are not removed from it; it resides within us. It is a choice and a consequence. For many of us, this Memorial Day weekend is a sacred moment. A pause. I can think of no better destination in rainy NYC than this one. Exhibition runs through May 24th. More information can be found here: @gilesduley

It’s been a couple of years since I posted a cover. ‘Blackbird’ has always been one of my favorite Beatles songs. To quote Jane Seymour, “If your heart is open, love will always find its way in.” (Anyone else remember the Open Hearts collection?) #hawkapella

Last night, we reminisced over dinner. Spelunking with spiders. Perseid showers. Corn mazes. Baseball games. Sunsets and sea glass and dogs and dishes. Mayhem. Mistakes. Messes. Births and deaths and puns and random kitchen dancing. I showed you something I wrote when our story was nascent. It was meant to be a song; but no right melody ever emerged because, as it turns out, you are the song of my life. We are two Aries building a fiery silly life together, where adventure meets mundane and that juncture is the point. The traditional gift for year 17 is furniture. Which is hilarious and apt because without knowing this fact, we brought six dining room chairs into our home yesterday. Solid wood, ladder-back, vintage, a bit eclectic. US. Foundational. And that’s the thing. You are my foundation. My home. My lighthouse. My person. Wherever our fiery silly wondrous life leads us next, I welcome it, because I know I am wholly loved. Love is you.

Who needs birthday cake when you can have birthday steak?! 🥩 🎂 Thanks for all the love yesterday! I began 44 waking up from a slumber party with my bestest ladies and ended it with a full belly and a family E.T. watch party! My 9 year old wanted to photograph Spring from the flowers’ perspective. I love that. Always looking up; reaching. Shifting towards the light. A life of color and whimsy. We all need more whimsy in our lives. 🌸🌷

🍋🐣Easter Sunday brought the resurrection of Jesus *and* my confidence in the kitchen! J/K this lemon curd tiramisu was a “recipe for a radio cooking show,” as my sister-in-love said. 🎙️ Let’s just say there was a steep “learning curd” involved. HOWEVER it tasted incredible and my signature one-handed egg breaks are on full display! And the teen helped, too! Thanks for the (much more beautiful) inspo, @vessys_gourmet_kitchen !#hawkwardkitchen #reelfails
On today’s episode of Hawkward Kitchen, Cabbagio et Pepe! 🥬🧈🧀 Heat butter, olive oil, and pepper in a pan. Add a can of white beans and your chopped cabbage. Cook until soft; remove from heat. Add all the cheese your heart desires! Finish with more freshly ground pepper. Eat! Optional: use your grandma’s pepper grinder 🥰 #hawkwardkitchen #reelfails
Made a golden lasagna! A pinch of salt, a dollop of straciatella, a dash of trial, and a heaping serving of error. Thanks for the inspo, @cocolarkincooks. I burnt my pasta sheet edges. Perhaps I should start a new cooking series called ‘Shake and Baker?’ Where I fail gloriously in the kitchen? Drop other title ideas in the comments. The punnier the better. Also I’m terrible at making reels. Whatever.
The trailer!

Four years ago this month we embarked on an epic journey to make a movie called DARUMA. It was a scrappy, low-budget indie film that starred two leads with disabilities. It took 17 years to make from the time the first draft of the script was written to when it finally screened to a sold-out crowd at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood.
No studio knew what to do with it so we said screw it, we’ll do it ourselves!
So we did. That little film and leap of faith in ourselves took us to numerous film festivals including Slamdance and brought our executive producer, Oscar-winner Peter Farrelly on board. We got an incredible cast including Golden Globe winner Barry Bostwick and Abigail Hawk of CBS Bluebloods.
The film took us to The White House, New York, Park City, Minneapolis, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Boston and more. Our two leads both won Best Acting Awards, including John W. Lawson who won Best Actor at @slamdancegroup and Tobias Forrest who won the Christopher Reeve Acting Award at the Media Access Awards. @reevefoundation @mediaaccessawards
We’ve made fans and friends all over the world because we believed in ourselves and our uncompromising vision. We’ve been seen on CNN, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, NPR and more.
And all because we said “we believe in ourselves”, even when no one else did.
To all of you who have something to say and want to make a movie, go for it. You never know where it will lead you and your voices are needed now more than ever.
