1 year passes on, but his legacy will remain forever! Remembering Ustad Zakir Hussain Ji on this emotional day with 2 of his special compositions which I have tried to play in tribute to him.

I feel so fortunate to have lived during his lifetime and seen the magic of his musicality, of his philosophy, of his humility, his passion, his dedication and his nurturing personality.

We all have our special memories of him and he never failed to light up our world at every moment...

Raga Darbari Kanada notated for Bass Clarinet and Tabla by our Artistic Director Jonathan Mayer, as part of our project to demystify south Asian classical music.

Featuring Adam Slater on Bass clarinet, Gurdain Rayatt on Tabla and Jonathan Mayer as Composer/tanpura.

The king of ragas, Darbari or Darbari Kanada is a serious raga and difficult to master. The meend (glissando) has to portray the crying of a king and it’s movement is very strict. It was composed in the 16th century by legendary musician Miyan Tansen who was a court musicians for the Moghul emperor Akbar The Great.

It is one of 10 Ragas with scores available for purchase at:

Each raga is accompanied by a tabla (percussion) accompaniment - available as score sheets and a video recording.
