✨Please join us Friday for the opening reception of @russham ‘s “PASSPORT”, a portrait study highlighting the Caribbean island of Jamaica @thelinehotel L.A.The exhibition recounts diasporic travel & experimental still-life moments suspended in time.

In tandem, is the grand opening of NALIA Commemorative (@naliabrand ),  a pop-up souvenir shop encompassing the entrepreneurial spirit of shopkeepers found throughout predominantly Black & Brown neighborhoods.Inspired by swap meets & flea marts, this conceptual store features an array of collectibles,original art pieces by the artist & community of collaborators.

The 3 month exhibition & the 2 month concept store are for his artist residency at the hotel from August to October 2024.

✨Happy July 5th New York✨

On July 5, 1827 4,000 Black New Yorkers paraded and decided to celebrate NY’s end of gradual emancipation. They decided to celebrate on July 5.This Jubilee celebration over years would inspire the work of Anne Murray and Fredrick Douglass, leading to the 1852 speech “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?”. It is why Douglass refused to give the speech on July 4th & delivered it on the 5th.

Eat some oysters and honor the pre 1920s Black communities of NYC/ NY that existed before Harlem.They are The Land of the Blacks, Little Africa, Five Points, Seneca Village, Weeksville, Sandy Ground, the Green, Centerville AME, Mother Zion AME, Guinea Town, Timbuctoo, Newtown, Skunk Hallow, New Cassel, SANS,Westchester, Albany,Rochester
and San Juan Hill.

These Black communities from various cultures & communities worldwide laid the foundation for Harlem & other Black communities to form in NYC/ NY.

My maternal, grandma’s family started migrating to Harlem from North Carolina in 1939, making me a 5th generation NYer.

Also, the 1st Black people to come to the areas now known as New York were Mathieu Da Costa in 1603 (areas of Upstate NY) and Jan Rodriguez in 1613 who is one of the first documented non-indigenous people to live on Manhattan Island. As such, he is considered the first non-native resident of what would become New York City.
