Final Call - Eden

It would frankly be bold of me to compare this album to anything godlike, but I can certainly describe it as both beautiful and complex, something we can all agree about that big guy upstairs. Entitled 'Eden', this debut record from New York-based alternative rock quartet Final Call (@finalcallmusic) captures those two previously stated themes perfectly, utilising their knack for atmospheric alt-rock hooks and somber instrumentation to drench their album in longing and nostalgia. From the ambient, and aptly titled opening of ‘The Garden’, the album immediately pulls you into its big and bright world before exploding into towering choruses and walls of shimmering guitars. Tracks that follow such as ‘You Can't Save Me’, 'What Remains' and ‘Lately’ perfectly embody the album’s emotional core; 'Eden' is a story of grief, and each of these tracks tells a different story with that theme at the centre. Final Call reinforces those notions through their instrumentation, which constantly shifts between fragile intimacy and overwhelming release. The softer, jangly guitars and slow-burning builds give the record a sense of emotional control, while the explosive choruses and heavier alt-rock moments feel like the antithetical outbursts. There are occasions where the band goes full-force into their sound, with ‘High School Romance’ and ‘10/9’ leaning the most into that bittersweet nostalgia, but both still hold their grounded rock sound at its core. So many modern alternative records get trapped chasing aesthetics, but Final Call have actually managed to back their sonic ambition with 'Eden'. It's poetically melancholic in all the best ways, and while it may not illustrate the paradise the title suggests, I can very much live with its current state.

The musical and lyrical themes reference back to the beginning of the album (The Garden and Perfect Day), wrapping up the record to say that we’re going to choose to remain optimistic in a sometimes crazy world - and that we’ve come full circle through these trials and tribulations to take on whatever life throws at us - and do the things that make us happy
