Exhibition: Refigured – County Hall London 2026

Fernanda Cortes – Casting & Ceramics Technician at the University of Leeds – has been selected to exhibit in Refigured @countyhallpottery (12 May to 21 June).

Part of @londoncraftweek Refigured: Embodiment in Contemporary Ceramics brings together four artists working with the human form in clay:

@fer.corte
@clairecurneen
@jessicaharrisonstudio
@john_rainey_

The exhibition looks at how the body has been shaped, represented and understood over time, and how these traditions can be re-read today. Familiar forms are questioned rather than preserved, revealing tension, fragility and new meaning beneath decorative surfaces.

Working across earthenware, stoneware and porcelain, the exhibition explores themes of identity, gender, power and collective memory. The ceramic body emerges as both intimate and unstable, shaped by history yet open to change.

Fernanda will present new sculptural works inspired by mythology, using hybrid human–animal figures to reflect on transformation, fragility and identity.

Fernanda will be giving an artist talk on 14 May to invited guests.

A curator talk and closing party will take place on 21 June.

Find out more about the exhibition @countyhallpottery and @londoncraftweek

*About Fernanda Cortes*

@fer.corte is a Mexican artist based in the UK, where she has developed her creative practice over the past nine years. She joined the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies @universityofleeds as a Casting and Ceramics Technician in 2024.

Her work combines sculpture and storytelling, using anthropomorphic forms to examine vulnerability, resilience and dehumanisation. Short stories accompany her sculptures, adding narrative depth to each piece.

From demolition waste to a sustainable surface.

Next month, Friday 5 June,we are hosting the ‘Material Response: shaping sustainable practices from clay and waste’ Symposium, concluding a six-week co-research programme directed by Chris Crawford and the Material Cognition Research Group at the University of Leeds, led by academics Moyra Derby (@moyraderby_projects) and Will Rea (@willrea1965), and funded by Ignite 2026 (@unileedsculture).

They've been investigating how recycled clay derived from construction waste can be used to craft less extractive ways of making both in ceramics and earthen building techniques.

The day brings together policy makers, engineers, and artists to pull back the curtain on cross-disciplinary collaboration. We will also be hosting a research in progress exhibition featuring work by selected speakers, students and other collaborators.

Full speaker list arriving soon, book now via Eventbrite.

Introducing HOLD.

HOLD brings together 34 undergraduate Fine Art students graduating from the University of Leeds this summer.

Over the past couple of years, our communal studios have held us and our work together. Side-by-side, we have developed distinct practices that explore a huge range of materials, issues, mediums, ideas and feelings.

Now the same studio spaces offer our work to welcome a wider audience as we take our turn to present the annual degree show. HOLD embraces the shared studio as a place and a way for making connections – amongst ourselves, between us and all the artists who have studied here before, and now with an audience.

Throughout our studies, we have explored and experimented. There have been successes and failures. Most importantly, there has been determination; a devotion to making and thinking, with each artist taking different directions.

HOLD demonstrates this same commitment. It presents a range of mediums from painting to installation, printmaking to video, and is accompanied by a programme of related engagement events running onsite and online.

The studios have now become galleries, and each one defends our desire for the intermingling of forms, mediums and subject matter. We have refused to create false separations and hope a spirit of staying together in our differences rings loud.

Through this, we want HOLD to open a chance for everyone to find the time and space to connect with us and our work, whether quickly or slowly, impulsively or contemplatively, alone or together.

Details from the last few days of ‘Words Worth Watching’ exhibition curated by Chris Taylor, Simon Lewandowski and myself at The Project Space @fahacs, celebrating @wild_pansy_press and the work of @wpp_writersroom.

Been such a pleasure to be surrounded by so many artists books, to meet new people and discuss independent publishing practices and why we write and work with printed matter. Thinking tangibility, tactility and intimacy, as well as the challenges and longevity of small presses, how we archive and the questions of physical and digital storage, and how might such projects respond to societal-financial shifts over time.

Thank you all who presented work, read, joined our workshops and talk, and to @emily_fielding and @joannajowett for leading on the workshops ~ so many cherished moments.

Thank you to all who attended our final day’s in conversation between @joannajowett of @copy_pages and Chris Taylor of @wild_pansy_press, as part of our show ‘Words Worth Watching’ at @fahacs. It was a wonderful informative discussion between them and the group around independent publishing, artists books and the community that can arise through printed matter, on how books hold conversation and space. Multidisciplinary forms that capture and interrogate projects, voices, moments.

A great end to the week in Leeds; it’s been a pleasure to meet so many new faces and be around all these practitioners!

Back to London now, but we will be returning!
