Last chance to see Dream House! This show was a lifeline for me in so many ways. I’m beyond grateful for everyone who helped make it happen, and I’m humbled by the community of friends and family that helped Kelli and I through the last 15 months. There is something going on beneath these 19 drawings that is beyond words. An attention to the mood of things. A kind of deep looking where you spend very little time telling yourself that what you’re seeing is a tree or a mountain or a broken down old barn. They have the feeling of looking into a crypt or staring at an oncoming tsunami. They embody moments of clarity, tears, heartache and bliss. When I tell you that Timothy and his wife, Kelli, lost their dream house in the Eaton Canyon fire you’ll see the whole picture. I knew about their loss before I saw this work. So when I saw it I knew what it was. It brought me back to the panicked moments where my family grabbed a few things and drove away. Smelling the smoke, and seeing a red horizon in a place where it couldn’t be the sunset. These drawings don’t feel stuck in fear and sadness, though. They read as a form of recovery to me. This kind of deep looking and feeling leads to healing and a desire to rebuild what is lost.

The title, “Mirrors” is seemingly meant to imply that these paintings are self portraits, but the subtext is that you’re seeing a reflection of yourself. If that’s true, perhaps we can gather that Biskup thinks this era of chaos and uncertainty is turning us all into jumbles of parts. The pieces seem to be balanced, though and maybe that’s the point? We’re staying upright and soldering on while trying to make sense out of the way we’re stacked.

Stylistically this show is playing the same field as Tim’s solo show of greyscale paintings, “Smoke” (@sadelosangeles, Nov 2023) where the artist blew up his iconic graphite drawings into large scale canvases. This time the influence of those drawings is clear but the explosion of color sets them off into classic Biskup mode. Brushstrokes are back in the mix along with the soft fades of what looks like airbrush work but is actually done with foam-rollers and extensive masking.

Biskup’s recent @hifructosemag cover story and a few other bits of media attention should bring new eyes to this exhibition along with the recent launch of his lifestyle shop, @home.guts next door to the gallery, which will launch new stock on the night of the opening kicking off their holiday shopping season.
